Inside Guernsey State Park

Across the state park’s 6,000 acres, visitors can enjoy recreational activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and more. There’s certainly something for everyone!

Hiking : There are approximately 14 miles of established historic trails available for hiking enthusiasts at the park, which were designed and built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the 1930s. Most of these are found on the west side of the reservoir. The starting point for the trail system is at the Brimmer Point turnoff, where visitors can also find a trail kiosk with a map of the trail system.

Swimming : The entire reservoir is open to swimming activities, which is most popular from April through September. For swimming “beaches”, these are located at the state park’s Sandy Beach, Sandy Point and Sandy Cove Campgrounds.

Boating : Boating enthusiasts can enjoy the 2,400 acres of Guernsey Reservoir, as water levels allow. Boat access points are found on the west side of the reservoir at the Sandy Beach launch area, the southeast end of the lake at the main boat launch area and at the north end of the reservoir at the Long Canyon ramp area.

Fishing : Although fish populations are affected by the reservoir's twice-yearly draw-downs, the state park is still a popular place for anglers to sink a line. River access for fishing is provided below the dam at the Spillway Day Use Area. Fish species include walleye, yellow perch, and channel catfish.

Horseback riding : Horseback riding is permitted at Guernsey State Park on the roadways of the park and the hiking trails located on the western side of the reservoir. Just keep in mind that horses are prohibited in developed campgrounds and picnic areas.

Biking : Along with the state park’s established roadways, bikers can also enjoy around 12 miles of challenging trails. See the trail kiosk (located at the turnoff to Brimmer Point) for biking trail maps.
