Present-day Clearfield, Utah was originally called Sand Ridge. It first began to attract European settlers around 1869, after the creation of the Utah Central Railroad. Far from a water source, settlers in Clearfield had to transport water barrels from Kays Creek, more than 7 miles away, until they could establish their own wells. The construction of the Davis and Weber Counties Canal in 1884 attracted a fresh wave of inhabitants. Subsequently, the first school was built in 1907. In 1943, the Clearfield Naval Supply Depot was established in the southwestern part of the town. This newly built depot was pivotal in population growth, which surged from nearly 1,000 residents in 1940 to over 4,700 by 1950. Presently, Clearfield is home to more than 30,000 people.
