Things To Do Near Timpanogos Cave National Monument
The cave system is the main attraction at the Timpanogos Cave National Monument, but there are plenty of other things to do in the park and nearby. The scenery in the canyon and along the American Fork River is spectacular whether you're hiking the park trails, enjoying a picnic, or taking a scenic drive. The busy Salt Lake City and Provo metro areas sit nearby in the valley, so shopping, dining, and entertainment are a short drive away.

Timpanogos Cave Trail
The paved Timpanogos Cave Trail leaves from the visitor center and travels high up the canyon walls. If you're bringing little ones, bear in mind that many sections run along the cliff face, with steep drops to one side. Strollers are not allowed on the trail or in the cave. Bring water and a warm layer; the weather frequently reaches 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, but the caves are always 45 degrees. The hike offers gorgeous views of the Wasatch Range and American Fork Canyon, and you'll find several places to rest and take in the scenery.

If you're up for more hiking after you've finished the Cave Trail, head across the street to the Canyon Nature Trail. The easiest way to get there is to leave your vehicle at the visitor center and walk about 100 yards down the road to the trailhead. The path runs over the American Fork River and through the forest, ending at the Swinging Bridge picnic area. It's paved and relatively easy to navigate, so you can bring a stroller or a wheelchair. The views of the canyon are fantastic, and educational signs along the way help you identify different geologic features and natural points of interest.

Introduction to Caving Tour
If you're interested in learning more about caving, reserve the park's Introduction to Caving Tour. With the help of a ranger and armed with a helmet and a headlamp, you'll explore some of the more challenging parts of the Timpanogos Cave system. Following the original tour route from the 1800s, you'll crawl, climb, and bend to get through narrow passages. As you explore, the ranger will teach you about different caving methods and ways to reduce your impact on the natural surroundings. This tour is open to people who are in good shape aged 14 and older; tours are limited to five people, so it's important to book in advance.
