Things To Do Near Martin Van Buren National Historic Site
The highlight of the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is the beautiful Lindenwald mansion, which is open seasonally for tours. If you're visiting, you can explore the grounds and get a sense of Dutch farm life in the 1700s and 1800s. Each of the sites in the park offers clarity into the influential life of Van Buren and other local families. Surrounding Lindenwald, the beautiful countryside and small towns offer plenty in the way of history, outdoor adventure, dining and shopping.

Lindenwald Wayside Loop Trail
If you do just one hike during your visit to Martin Van Buren National Historic Site, make it the Lindenwald Wayside Loop Trail. This short, easy route takes you through the grounds of Lindenwald. Along the way, 11 different interpretive signs help you understand how the Van Buren household played a part in the local life and national politics. You can also download a free audio tour guide to listen to as you walk, and if you have little ones, ask in the visitor center for a list of scavenger hunt items.

Kinderhook Dutch Farming Heritage Trail
Wander through the lush farm fields of the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site on the Kinderhook Dutch Farming Heritage Trail. It travels from Lindenwald to the Luykas Van Alen House, taking you past all of the crucial sites in the area. As you walk, you'll see firsthand how the Dutch farming tradition evolved throughout the centuries. In the winter, bring your snowshoes or cross-country skis for a fun, snowy day of exploring.

Lindenwald
The highlight of any trip to Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is a tour of Lindenwald, Van Buren's home. It's been painstakingly restored to look as it would have during the height of the former president's life. Tours are available, so you can walk through the rooms and learn about the role the estate played as the United States hurtled toward the Civil War.

Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse
If you're a fan of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving, make sure to check out the Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse. The character of Ichabod Crane was based on Jesse Merwin, who taught at the original schoolhouse on the same property; the current building was constructed in 1850. During your visit, you can learn about Irving and his friendship with Martin Van Buren. Explore the interior during the summer and fall, and feel free to explore the grounds the rest of the year.

Luykas Van Alen House
Located a quick walk from the Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse, the Luykas Van Alen House is a National Historic Landmark. Inside, you can learn about the way Dutch families lived and worked in the 1700s. The house was built in 1737 and has been restored to its original style. As legend has it, the Van Alen family was the inspiration for the Van Tassel family in "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Take a tour on weekends from June through October.

Bronck House Museum
Once you've explored the Dutch tradition at the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site, head over to the Bronck House Museum to see how Swedish immigrants lived in the mid-1600s. Here, you can see a house that was built in 1663 by Pieter Bronck - the oldest home in upstate New York, and another that was built in the Dutch style in 1739 by Bronck's grandchild. The farm was in the Bronck family for 276 years; today, you can explore the houses and the various barns on the property.
