RVing to Acadia National Park also allows you to fish in the Atlantic Ocean, the Mount Desert Island area, and Somes Sound, where you can catch mackerel, bluefish, and striped bass during the summer. If you are an advanced rock climber, then a short hike out on the Great Head Peninsula will yield access to many sport climbs from 5.9 to 5.12 difficulty. The Schoodic Peninsula gives you access to photographic opportunities along the rugged Maine coastline and the Schoodic Research Learning Center, a family-friendly educational operation. It's open 10 a.m.-5. p.m., closed on holidays. The main visitor center is the Hulls Cove Visitor Center, which is also on Mount Desert Island. It's open from May 15 until Oct. 31, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. When the center is closed for the season, the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce acts as the visitor center. Its hours of operation are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. daily, except holidays.
The best time to visit is from late May until early October. The fishing is best in the spring and summer, and the changing leaves in the autumn are worth the trip alone. You can start your trip from nearby Maine cities with RV rentals in Portland, Bangor, and Bar Harbor. Traveling by RV to Acadia is a great idea as there are three campgrounds in the park suitable for RV camping. Blackwoods and Seawall Campgrounds can accommodate rigs up to 35 feet long. Alternatively, Schoodic Woods Campground has sites for RVs up to 45 feet long.
Every vehicle that enters Acadia National Park must have a park pass. RVs are prohibited on certain roads and areas in Acadia National Park. These include Cadillac Summit, Echo Lake Beach, and Lurvey Spring roads. In addition, there are several other areas that either have covered bridges that are too short for an RV, ground that is too soft for heavy vehicles, or places that become too narrow for an RV to navigate. The Hulls Cove Visitor Center has complete information regarding the restricted areas. Once you cross the bridge to the Thompson Island Information Center, there are two entrance roads to the park: Main Street and Bar Harbor Road. To find out about road closures and other seasonal information about the park, check the official site of Acadia National Park.
