At 2,800 acres, Governor Thompson State Park is a huge preserve offering several miles of shoreline along the Caldron Falls Reservoir and along two smaller lakes within the park. Located near the town of Crivitz in northeastern Wisconsin, this state park is adjacent to the Peshtigo River State Forest. Canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and hiking are just some of the activities that you can enjoy at this popular Wisconsin state park.

RV Resorts & Campsites in Governor Thompson State Park

You'll find 100 different sites to choose from at the Family Campground in Governor Thompson State Park. All of the sites can accommodate either tent or RV camping. In the east loop, you'll find some sites with electrical hookups and two ADA-accessible spots. Sites in the north loop and the south loop do not have any hookups. Campers have access to vault toilets and water fountains as well as a bathhouse with flushing toilets and showers. A dump station for RV travelers is also available on the road leading to the campground, and firewood is available for sale at the park office. In addition to the main Family Campground, there are several primitive boat-in campsites where you can stay overnight.

Governor Thompson State Park

With boat launches, a swimming beach, and several fishing piers, it's easy to enjoy access to the Peshtigo River, the Caldron Falls Reservoir, and Woods Lake. Picnic shelters can be found in the day-use areas, and adventurers will find several hiking trails and mountain biking trails to choose from.

Fishing Fishing

The park sits next to the Peshtigo River, which has excellent fly-fishing opportunities. You're mostly likely to catch crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, musky, panfish, walleye, and perch. Ice fishing is popular in the winter when conditions are icy enough.

Geocaching Geocaching

Governor Thompson State Park participates in the Wisconsin Geocaching Association's State Park series of geocaches, so there is always at least one hidden treasure waiting to be found at the park. Check your geocaching app to find the clues as to where to find it.

Stargazing Stargazing

Stargazing events are held regularly in the park in partnership with the University of Wisconsin's Universe in the Park program. Learn about the night sky and gaze through a telescope at these free astronomy events.

Flora and Fauna

Lots of deer can be spotted in the park, and even a black bear makes an appearance from time to time. Other animals you might spot during your visit include various frogs, turtles, chipmunks, and birds such as turkeys, grouse, bald eagles, and sandhill cranes. If you're staying overnight in the campground, you're likely to spot some raccoons, too. Wild berries grow near the campground, including both blackberries and raspberries, particularly in July and August. The aspen and oak trees in the park provide shade and wonderful fall foliage colors.

Hiking Hiking

Choose from several different trails when hiking at this state park. The Forest View Trail is one popular option. This 3.5-mile trail offers some shade as it meanders along the forest near Woods Lake. The Granite Path Trail and the Otter Trail both start near Woods Lake.

Swimming Swimming

When the weather is warm enough, head to the 150-foot sandy beach area on Woods Lake for the best swimming beach. Restrooms and a grassy area are nearby, making this the perfect spot for a relaxing and enjoyable day.

Boating

The canoeing and kayaking are excellent along the peaceful Peshtigo River. Several boat docks are available, including a boat launch at the Caldron Falls Reservoir. Note that only non-motorized boats are permitted on Woods Lake.

Biking

Cyclists can get around the park by exploring the South Bay Trail, which meanders around the park for several miles. You can also ride your bike along the Nighthawk Trail, though cyclists are not permitted on the other trails within the park.

How to Get to
Governor Thompson State Park

When coming from Green Bay, head north on US-41 N. Take a left to merge on to Highway 141 heading north. Follow this until you reach the town of Crivitz. Head east out of Crivitz on County Highway A northwest and then take a left onto County Highway X at the four-way stop. Next, turn right onto Parkway Road and then after about a half-mile, turn left onto Ranch Road. After about a mile, you'll turn right onto Paust Lane in order to enter the park.
