Originally, the area that would eventually be Sioux City was inhabited by the Yankton Sioux Native American tribe. Spanish and French fur trappers arrived during the 18th century, and the first U.S. citizens to record their travels through the area were Lewis and Clark in 1804. The only death on their famous expedition occurred in the area when Charles Floyd passed away on August 20th, 1804.
