Explore Louviers, Colorado, in an RVshare RV Rental

Louviers started as a DuPont Company town in 1906. This small town was unique for Colorado because it was never associated with mining or agriculture. The Louviers Works dynamite plant was built nearby in 1906. As the largest explosives manufacturer in the world, the DuPont Company built this plant to supply the necessary explosives for mines and roads in Colorado.

The DuPont Company wanted to build a model community to ensure long-term employees, so they purchased the land around the Jones Ranch. The land was perfect for the company because it was close to the railroad, Denver’s supply of laborers, and the mines. At first, the town was called Toluca, but the name was changed to Louviers in 1907. Louviers was the name of a city in France.

This company town had a few distinctive features. One of these features was the lack of formal names for the roads. The DuPont company gave the houses numbers, and none had any driveways. The company provided all public buildings such as the post office, dining room, store, and the Louviers Village Club. This club had a dance hall, movie theater, barbershop, bowling alley, and meeting space. DuPont sold the land and houses in 1962 when dynamite production slowed.

Today, the town of Louviers has a population of around 282 people. Located 20 miles from Denver, the area around the city has a lot to offer, including the Latin American Art Museum, Union Station, Denver Zoo, Elitch Gardens Theme Park, and much more.
