- Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah is famous for its sizeable desert landscape carved by the Colorado River. Popular attraction sites include the Needles district, famous for its colorful rock spires, the Island in the Sky flat-topped mesa, which provides an expansive view of the surrounding landscape, and the Maze, a rugged and remote region ideal for backcountry adventures. Spring and fall are the best times to visit Canyonlands National Park when the temperature is milder, making it perfect for sightseeing and hiking.
Exploring the park in an RV offers you the freedom to visit famous sites at your own pace and comfort as you navigate this vast and remote region. You may find RV rentals in Moab, which is a short drive from the park. Salt Lake City and Grand Junction are other convenient RV rental places. Although Canyonlands National Park Visitor Center Hours are open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the spring and fall, the entrances are open 24/7 for campers.
When planning your RV trip to Canyonlands National Park, note the restrictions and driving limitations within the park. The Needles district accommodates RVs up to 28 feet, yet transversing the roads can still be problematic because of rough terrains and tight turns. The Island in the Sky district has limited RV parking, and vehicles that exceed 28 feet are not recommended on the narrow, winding roads. Permits are not needed for standard RV access into the park, yet if you plan to utilize some amenities or camping in the backcountry, you may be required to get a permit.
The most preferred RV access point is the Island in the Sky entrance, off US Highway 191, about 40 miles from Moab. Check the National Park Service's Canyonlands Road Status website for possible road closures and conditions.
