Colorado Bend State Park encompasses 5,000 stunning acres in the state of Texas, opening in 1987. As a fairly new state park, it has many beautiful features such as travertine formations, springs, waterfalls, roaring rivers, and a system of caves to explore. There are even spring-fed swimming holes where you can cool off on those hot summer days. While visiting, save some time to see the park’s 70-foot-tall Gorman Falls.

Texas Hills RV Haven
Quiet, well-maintained, and right on the scenic shores of Lake Buchanan, Texas Hills RV Haven is the perfect place to camp if you don’t mind a bit of a drive to the state park gates. (Although it’s only a few miles south as the crow flies, the rural road system means the trip will take you about an hour.)
Fortunately, there’s enough to see and do onsite that you won’t feel like you miss out even if you never leave the campground. With horseshoe pits, a playground, and that lovely lakefront, you’ll have plenty to keep everyone in your motorhome or travel trailer occupied.

Colorado Bend State Park
You’ll find a variety of outdoor activities to enjoy while visiting Colorado Bend State Park, ranging from fishing and boating to exploring over 400 caves. Knowledgeable guides are ready to help you see the park’s cavernous network up close. Hiking is always popular here, with 35 miles of trails featuring waterfalls, scenic views, and wildlife.
In addition to camping, you’ll find many opportunities to hike, bike, and explore the many beautiful areas of this park. While in the park, you’ll find numerous rivers, springs, and swimming holes that provide water activities of all kinds.

Hiking - With a vast network of more than 35 miles of hiking trails, if you like to see the landscape on foot, Colorado Bend State Park won’t disappoint you -- especially if you make the trek to the famous Gorman Falls, photographed above.
Boating and swimming - The river is a main draw for many visitors… and after all, it is the park’s namesake! Whether you’re taking a dip at Spicewood Springs or taking advantage of the park’s on-site kayak rentals, there’s no shortage of ways to get wet and wild at Colorado Bend.
Fishing - This section of the Colorado is renowned for its plentiful supply of bass… and when you’re within the park boundaries, you don’t even need a Texas fishing license to get in on the action!
Cave tours - Move aside, Carlsbad and Mammoth. Colorado Bend State Park is home to over 400 caves, and an expert guide can help you get to know them up close and personal. (Cave tours must be reserved ahead of time.)
Fishing
The section of the Colorado River that runs through Colorado Bend State Park is known for its plentiful supply of bass. It’s earned a reputation for being the best bass fishing in central Texas. Other catches include catfish and bluegill. For your convenience, you’ll find a fish-cleaning station near the river on the park’s southern end.
Nature Watching
There are 155 species of birds for bird watchers to enjoy, including golden-cheeked warblers, bald eagles, and black-capped Vireo. On land, you’ll discover coyotes, wild pigs, and white-tailed deer. The Tie Slide Trail is one of the park’s best wildlife viewing areas.
Flora and Fauna
Colorado Bend State Park has beautiful terrain that guests can explore on foot or by taking a boat ride on the river. The shores along the water have some of the park’s best vegetation. Several bird species can be found in the shrubs along the river. Among these birds are the red-tailed hawk, yellow-billed cuckoo, belted kingfisher, golden-fronted woodpecker, various types of vultures, and even a bald eagle.
Hiking
Colorado Bend State Park has trails for all skill levels. River Trail is a shaded, easy trail with access to the river. Gorman Falls Trail is a little more challenging with a rocky terrain and steep hills. The three-mile round trip is rewarded with a wonderful view of the falls. Spicewood Springs Trail is the park’s most popular hike. Here, you’ll find waterfalls and natural pools as you hike to the top of a canyon.
Boating
You can rent a single or double-seat kayak within the park. These are rented by the hour or per day. If you bring along your own boat, you’ll find a boat ramp at Lake Buchanan, just south of the park.
Swimming
Swimming is allowed in Colorado Bend State Park’s swimming holes, the river, and the waterfall pools. Spicewood Springs is one of the most popular swimming spots in the Hill Country of Texas.
Biking
Colorado Bend State Park has some of the most exciting mountain biking experiences in Texas with plenty of trails to pick from. These trails range from easy to difficult, so there’s something for every skill level. Old Gorman Trail is a favorite of bikers with a half-mile downhill slope.
How to Get to
Colorado Bend State Park
When coming from Lometa, TX, head southeast on West Railway North Street. Turn right on East Main Street. Take another right onto Farm to Market 580. Next, take a slight right on County Road 440. Turn right onto County Road 436/County Road 442. Colorado Bend State Park will be within 2.8 miles.
Entering Colorado Bend State Park
You’ll find several parking lots throughout the park, including at the park entrance and at the trailheads. There’s a $5 fee for all visitors age 13 years or older. Children are free. Additional fees apply for guided cave tours and kayak rentals. Once inside the park, vehicles, including RVs, can use the parking lots for no additional fee.
Frequently Asked Questions About Colorado Bend State Park
The best time to visit Colorado Bend State Park is during March and April. The temperatures at this time of year range from the 50s to the 70s, which is perfect for hiking. When visiting in early spring, you’ll also be able to enjoy the many flowers in bloom.
Colorado Bend State Park is home to coyotes, wild pigs, and white-tailed deer. You’ll find much of the wildlife along the Tie Slide Trail. Bird watchers will find several species in the shrubs along the river and bald eagles overhead.
Colorado Bend State Park has 15 designated RV campsites for self-contained RVs up to 30 feet in length. There are no hookups of any type available, but there is drinkable water, picnic tables, and fire rings nearby.
Reservations are not required for Colorado Bend State Park’s RV campsites, but they recommend them during busier times of the year to ensure you have a spot. Fees are $15 per night in addition to your entrance fee.
Dogs are welcome in Colorado Bend State Park. They must be kept on a leash at all times for their safety and others. Most trails are pet-friendly.
