L. L. Stub Stewart State Park is found in Washington County, Oregon, and offers 1,654 acres to explore. Planning of the park began in the late 1990s, but the park did not officially open until July 2007. Originally, the park was named Washington County State Park, then Hare's Canyon State Park. However, the name changed again right before the opening to honor Oregon state representative Loren LaSells "Stub" Stewart, who was a member of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission and the State Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee for nearly 40 years. Perhaps what makes L.L. Stub Stewart State Park so unique is the fact that it features a hillside with a natural forest growing on it. Other notable features of the park include canyons, picnic shelters and meeting halls, a cabin village, a horse camp, and a disc golf course.

RV Resorts & Campsites in L.L. Stub Stewart State Park
Year-round camping is available at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park, and RV campers have access to 78 sites with full hookups. Each campsite features a fire ring and a picnic table, and the Dairy Creek Campground found at the park has five universally accessible sites for visitors with disabilities. Hares Canyon Horse Camp is another option for camping with your horse, and this campground has 13 sites with full hookups plus access to four and six-stall corrals with manure bins. Hares Canyon Horse Camp is only open seasonally, and all of the RV-friendly camp areas at this state park offer reservations online.
What to Do at
L.L. Stub Stewart State Park
At L.L. Stub Stewart State Park, visitors can enjoy two mountain-style disc golf courses, which include a nine-hole beginner course and an 18-hole challenging course. Discs are available for purchase at the Stub Stewart Welcome Center. It also offers bike helmets and water bottles for purchase. Other park highlights include an off-leash pet area, over 30 miles of hiking, biking, equestrian trails, a playground, and picnic sites. Check the calendar of events before your visit because ranger-led educational programs are available throughout the year.
Stargazing
Stargazing at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park is excellent since the park's hillside trees tend to filter out the light pollution from nearby cities. Stargazers who have a stargazing pass, free to obtain from the welcome center, are permitted to stay after day-use closing hours for stargazing.
Hiking
There are plenty of trails that vary in difficulty at this state park, including Brooke Creek Trail, Widowmaker Way, and Hares Canyon Trail. Most trails of the park are reserved for multi-use, but the 0.4-mile, moderate Timber Beast Trail is reserved for hiking only.
Biking
Mountain biking is popular at this park, and bikers typically use the Greenhorn, Drip-Torch, and Rinse and Repeat freeride trails in the park's Mountain Bike Core Area. Other cross-country trails are available, including the Shoofly, Rise and Shine, and Crazy Train trails. Aside from the Timber Beast Trail, less technical biking is also allowed on any of the park's regular trails.

L.L. Stub Stewart State Park
L.L. Stub Stewart State Park is located just 33 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon. To reach the park from Portland, you can take SW Clay Street to US-26 for 28 miles, then take a slight right onto OR-47 N. Continue four miles, then turn right to enter the park.
Entering L.L. Stub Stewart State Park
After entering L.L. Stub Stewart State Park, you can park at either the welcome center, the Log Flume Trailhead, the Hilltop Day-Use Area, or the Clayhill Horse Staging Area. There is additional parking for visitors with an ADA parking tag along the Banks-Vernonia State Trail.

Stub Stewart State Park is during the spring, summer, or fall when the trails are pleasant to hike, and you can easily access the popular disc golf courses. For visitors who want to go camping, visiting in the winter is also a good option since the campground is less crowded during this season.
This state park is found in the Oregon coast region, and wildlife of this region includes the American beaver, American black bear, mule deer, coyote, deer mouse, river otter, and striped skunk. There are also some native birds in the area, including the great blue heron, brown pelican, and Canada goose.
This state park has 78 sites open for RVers to use, and all of these sites feature 50-amp electrical hookups and standard water hookups. Most campsites can accommodate RVs up to 63 feet in length, while some of the horse-friendly sites can accommodate vehicles up to 72 feet.
Reservations are required for all RV campsites at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park, and only a handful of walk-in tent sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you live in the state, a site costs $33; nonresidents pay $41.
Pets are allowed at this state park and on most hiking trails. However, they must be on a leash, and you are expected to pick up after your furry family members.
