Lewis and Clark State Park commemorates where the Lewis and Clark expedition spent the winter of 1804 and 1805 on one of the upper bays of Lake Sakakawea. In addition to being a lakeshore park with a sandy swimming beach, this facility has a terrific mixed-grass prairie, a fantastic spot to go fishing. Bikes, snowshoes, paddleboards, canoes, and kayaks are available to rent on-site if you do not bring your own. Near this park, close to Epping, North Dakota, visitors can visit the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, play golf on the Links of North Dakota, and tour Fort Bufford State Historic Site.

What to Do at
Lewis and Clark State Park
North Dakota's Lewis and Clark State Park has a marina where you can rent various boats to play on Lake Sakakawea. Anglers delight in catching walleye, sauger, and northern pike throughout the year. It is also a popular destination for ice fishing in the winter. The beach is a terrific place to go swimming in the warmer months. The hiking trails are an excellent way to explore the outdoors in North Dakota, and once the snow flies, they are open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Many people spend recreational time at Lewis and Clark State Park playing on the lake in warmer months, while winter sports are popular during the colder months.
Inside Lewis and Clark State Park
Whether you’re hoping to enjoy recreational activities such as hiking, boating, swimming, fishing, kayaking, or more – there’s something to keep every type of traveler entertained at Lewis and Clark State Park.
Hiking : The state park has more than eight miles of multi-use, non-motorized trails, making it the perfect place to explore on foot. There’s a self-guided nature trail, as well as the North Trail System, South Trail System, and Shoreline Trail. View the trail maphere.
Boating : Modern boating facilities, including a marina with slip rentals and boat ramps, give boats access to the northern tip of enormous Lake Sakakawea. The ramp is located on the east side of the park, close to designated parking, restrooms, a fishing cleaning station, and more.
Swimming : Visitors can also enjoy the swimming area and a day-use beach located along the east shore of the campground near the camping cabins. It’s the perfect place to cool-down during summer.
Fishing : Lake Sakakawea offers excellent fishing, giving anglers a chance to catch species such as walleye, sauger and northern pike. Two rare fish species, the pallid sturgeon and the prehistoric-looking paddlefish, can occasionally be found in the lake's western reaches.
Kayaking and canoeing : During summer, canoes and kayaks can be rented from the marina.
Fishing
Lake Sakakawea is a fantastic place to go fishing for walleye. In the early spring, they often bite on pitched jigs, but as the weather warms up, try fishing for them on bottom bouncers. Deep crankbaits will usually yield the best results during summer's hottest days. Jigs and minnows can be fantastic options in the autumn. Anglers can also ice fish at this location.
Geocaching
Lewis and Clark State Park partners with the North Dakota Geocaching Association to offer guests a geocaching experience. Visitors can download an app that will lead them to visual caches, which they record in the app to receive a new clue.
Nature Watching
The largest mixed-grass prairie in North Dakota is at this park. It is home to white-tailed deer, mule deer, ring-necked pheasant, porcupine, sharp-tailed grouse, and chipmunks. Learn more about them at the informational kiosks along the Coteau Trail.
Stargazing
This park's remote location makes it a terrific option for stargazing. In particular, consider heading out along the Eskers Trail, where you will find an overlook where you can see for miles. You will love seeing the night sky set against the lake and the Badlands.
Flora and Fauna
Besides the large lake, this park has a mixed-use prairie containing short and tall grasses. Scattered around the park, you will also find groves of trees. Many of these groves have fruit trees that bloom in the spring.
Hiking
The looped 2.6-mile-long Eskers Trail is a fantastic place to go hiking through open areas and across mixed-grass hilltops. You will often see butterflies flitting across the sky. The bench near the stream is a terrific place for peaceful meditation. Try snowshoeing on this park's groomed trails if you want a unique winter adventure.
Boating
Canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards are available to rent on an hourly or daily basis at Lewis and Clark State Park. The marina has 74 slips ranging in size from 24 to 75 feet. The park rents out most of the slips on a seasonal basis, but a few are available at a daily rate. There are also two boat launches at the park.
Biking
Bikes are available to rent by the day or the hour. Each rental comes with a bike helmet. You can ride the bikes along park roads.
How to Get to
Lewis and Clark State Park
It is easy to get to Lewis and Clark State Park from Epping, North Dakota. Start by going south on County Highway 42. Turn left on North Dakota 1804. In 4.1 miles, turn right on County Highway 15. Continue for 3.2 miles, and you will see the park.
Entering Lewis and Clark State Park
The cost to enter the park is $5 per vehicle. There is a $25 camping fee. You can find parking for vehicles of all sizes near the marina and the park's headquarters.
