Located along the Potomac River, Smallwood State Park showcases unique historic preservation and provides a modern-day outdoor experience. The 628-acre park was named after a Revolutionary War officer, General William Smallwood. The once-plantation house has been restored and is now open to visitors. The state park also offers a camping area, nature trails, boat launching ramps, and a marina. What's more, the park hosts military exhibitions, craft demonstrations, and many other special events. Nearby cities include Marbury, MD and Woodbridge, VA.

Smallwood State Park
Smallwood State Park has 15 RV-friendly campsites. Each site has fire rings, picnic tables, electric hookups, and lantern posts. Additionally, you'll love the view of the forested area that offers shades and hiking trails. For your convenience, the management has constructed dump stations and restrooms with hot water showers nearby. You can come with your dog too as all the sites in the campground are pet-friendly.
Cedarville Family Campground Area
If you still want to explore more campgrounds around Smallwood, Cedarville is one of the closest options at roughly 40 minutes to the northeast of the park. Outdoor enthusiasts will have the time of their life, exploring this cozy and quiet campground. It offers renovated bathhouses with flush toilets and showers. Visitors get to enjoy electric hookups though sewer and water connections are still not available. The dump station is near the water-fill station at the entrance. Feel free to bring your pets as you relax, read, and explore around the campfire while making memories that will last for years to come.
Pohick Bay Regional Park
Pohick Bay Regional Park is a fun place to stay for the whole family. Your kids will have a lovely time at Pirate Cove's Waterpark, sliding, splashing, and cooling off. The park has electric hookups for RVs. Their camp store has camping supplies such as lighter fluid, charcoal, and firewood. Picnic tables, fire rings, and grills are also available. You can take a warm shower, use clean toilets, and even do your laundry at the bathhouses. Walking through the trails leads you to the waterpark, mini-golf, and waterfront. Full hookup sites are available also.

History buffs love Smallwood State Park because of all the painstakingly restored historical sites. Outdoor lovers will appreciate the park's location, which offers opportunities to canoe the water trail and relax on a pontoon along the Mattawoman Creek. There are also dozens of pavilions and ranger programs to keep you entertained. Once you’re done setting up your camp, you can put on your hiking boots for an incredible experience at the park's hiking trails.
How to Get to
Smallwood State Park
You can access Smallwood State Park easily off MD-210, which is south towards Indian Head. Turn left on Route 225, and drive to Route 224. Turn right when you reach the light at Route 224. Drive for roughly 3 miles towards the entrance of the park.
Entering Smallwood State Park
Smallwood State Park is open from 5 a.m. to sunset from April to October and from 7 a.m. to sunset from November to March.
