Explore Smithville, Texas, in an RVshare RV Rental

The area now called Smithville was once part of Mexico and home to the Lipan and Tonkawa tribes. Doctor Thomas Jefferson Gazley moved to the area in 1827 when he established a trading post and practiced medicine. He was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. After the Mexican War, he moved away but returned in 1894 to establish a ferry boat landing. He was the first to build a log cabin in the area, and he chose a site near Independence Park.

William Smith moved to the area several years later and opened a store. The area informally became known as Smithville and attracted several families, including that of Murray Burleson. When the railroad wanted to go two miles east of the small community, Murray Burleson donated the land for the depot, but he wanted the name changed to Burleson. This greatly upset William Smith, so they decided on a coin toss to determine the community's name. Smith won the toss, and the town officially became Smithville when it was incorporated in 1895.

The arrival of the railroad changed this community in many ways. Hundreds of men worked for the railroad, and Smithville was their home base. The Katy Railroad built a huge passenger depot and switching yard, and they also constructed a YMCA. Meanwhile, railroad engineers built homes as far away from the dirt, congestion, and noise of the railroad tracks as they could get. The city was the scene of a steam engine explosion on February 8, 1911, that killed eight people and injured 12. That disaster was the worst in early railroad history not caused by a collision. Set aside some time to visit the depot and see the vintage train cars at James H. Long Railroad Park.

After spending the day in this town of about 4,300 people, consider relaxing at one of the wine bars. The Front Room is stylized after a Scottish pub, and it features nightly specials like halibut and prime rib. You'll also want to consider The Fat Cat Lounge where you can often hear bands performing jazz and blues music.
