Explore Rockport, Texas, in an RVshare RV Rental

Numerous organizations have nominated Rockport as one of the best places to retire in America and one of the best small towns to visit in the United States. This small community of about 11,000 was named for the rock ledge underlying its shore. This community, which is the county seat of Aransas County, was founded in 1870 as a town and 1871 as a city. You can learn more about this period in the city's history by visiting The History Center for Aransas County.

Following the Civil War, William S. Hall built the first cattle slaughtering plant in Rockport, and many others built surrounding businesses tied to this industry. George Ware Fulton was the leader. He convinced Youngs Coleman, his son Thomas M. Coleman, Thomas Henry Mathis, and his cousin, J. M. Mathis to create Coleman-Fulton Pasture Company and amassed 265,000 acres of grazing land. While the company was eventually called the Taft Ranch after it changed ownership several times, they were responsible for many advances in the cattle industry, including improving breeds, and were early adopters of barbed wire. You can still taste great Texas beef when you dine at The Palm Room Bar & Grill, 495 Chesapeake Eats, and Wild Prawn.

Starting in the early 1880s, many people in Rockport found employment as boatbuilders. Texas' first governor appointed R. H. Wood to oversee the area. He gave him special instructions to make sure to protect nature, and one result of his work was the establishment of the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, where you will want to see the thousands of whooping cranes that winter here from November to March. You will also want to visit the Connie Hagar Wildlife Sanctuary, named for this leader's expertise on Texas birds.
