- Staunton River State Park
Tucked neatly into the heart of Virginia, just 25 miles from the North Carolina border, you'll find Staunton River State Park, Virginia's first location that was designated as an International Dark Sky Park. The 2,400-acre park brings in many outdoor enthusiasts, astronomy buffs, and families each year by offering a vast number of recreational activities and by boasting 17 miles of multi-use trails; it also features a large pool with a 70-foot waterslide. The park runs along the Dan and Staunton rivers' shoreline and sits 18 miles east of South Boston and southeast of Scottsburg, Virginia. Staunton River State Park is filled with history and is named for Captain Henry Staunton, who commanded a group of soldiers to protect early settlers from Indian attacks; it was later recognized in 2007 as a National Historic Landmark. One major tourist attraction this park offers is the canopy of tall mature trees and the beautiful array of colors that they produce in autumn.
