The state park sits on the north shore of Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford County, about 40 miles from Roanoke and Lynchburg and 140 miles from Richmond. Smith Mountain Lake was formed in 1960 and today it's the second-largest freshwater lake in Virginia. This place is a charming water enthusiast's paradise with plenty of water activities, including boating, a fishing pier, a sandy beach, and cool swimming. The park offers spectacular views of the hardwood forests, secluded coves, pines, and picturesque vistas. Eagle’s Roost Campground
Eagle’s Roost Campground offers RV seasonal sites with water, electric, and sewer hookups. It's a seasonal site-only campground with three dump stations, two bathhouses, and public restrooms in the office. This pet-friendly campground is the ideal place to go geocaching, hiking, fishing, boating, and golfing. Many vineyards are within an hour's drive from the campground.
Sweet Water RV Park
Sweet Water RV Park is a short 3-mile drive from the state park and features RV sites with partial and full hookup availability. All sites are set up with a picnic table and fire ring. The campground has an underground swimming pool to keep you cool on hot days. Amenities offered here include cable TV, a dump station, a laundry facility, a camp store, and a propane refill station.
Camp Karma
Camp Karma features 36 primitive campsites that are ideal for tent campers, small trailers, and pop-ups measuring up to 25 to 28 feet. This 42-acre campground has a pond, hiking trails, a camp store, and a recreational field. With the campground being located between Roanoke and Lynchburg, you'll have plenty of family entertainment nearby.

Inside Smith Mountain Lake State Park, you can explore the sites on 13 hiking trails that meander through the hardwood forest, extraordinary vistas, pine trees, and secluded coves. The park features a 500-foot beach with lifeguarded swimming from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Boat fishing is a popular activity on the lake and is perfect for catching smallmouth bass, catfish, striped bass, and largemouth bass. Enjoy more watersport activities by renting a canoe, paddleboat, pontoon boat, kayak, ski boat, hydro bike, or jet ski from the park office. Other exciting activities inside the state park are camping, picnicking, birdwatching, and wildlife observation.
How to Get to
Smith Mountain Lake State Park
If you're traveling from the city of Huddleston, you'll want to head southwest on State Route 626 towards State Route 920 for 8.8 miles. Make a right onto Road 888, and follow signs to the state park.

Smith Mountain Lake State Park has 24 designated camping sites. Of those sites, 19 are back-in, and 5 are pull-thru. Reservations are suggested for the prime season.
Pets are permitted in the campgrounds and cabins but not in the public beach area. Pets must be attended to and cleaned up after. Proof of current rabies vaccination is required.
Smith Mountain Lake State Park has one cabin with wheelchair-accessible entry and a bathroom. A fishing pier and one of the campsites are wheelchair-accessible.
