What to Do at
Elmore State Park
The sandy beach at Elmore State Park is great for swimming during the summer, and at 219 acres, Lake Elmore is excellent for kayaking and canoeing. Anglers can bring along a small boat with an electric motor to navigate the lake and search for the perfect fishing spot. The hiking trails range in difficulty from easy to moderate and are just right for morning or afternoon expeditions.
Inside Elmore State Park
Elmore State Park offers two hiking trails to the top of Elmore Mountain. At the summit, climb the fire tower where miles of stunning 360-degree views await. Overnight camping and boat rentals are available. Swim at the sandy beachfront or play volleyball or horseshoes. Have a family picnic at the numerous grills and tables or take some time to cast for panfish, perch, or pike.
Fishing
Although Lake Elmore is relatively small, it is replete with many species of fish, which include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike, panfish, and bullhead. You need the applicable fishing license, and there are certain months of the year when catch limits are in effect.
Stargazing
This park is far away from city lights, making it a fantastic place to enjoy an evening staring at the heavens. You can bring a blanket to the beach or set up a telescope at one of the tables in the picnic area.
Flora and Fauna
The wildflowers in Elmore State Park include Dutchman's breeches, trout lily, and pink slippers. While exploring, you will also see apple trees, which date from the time before 1936 when the area was all farmland. As far as wildlife goes, moose, deer, and black bears make up the big game contingent. Smaller animals you might spot include minks, otters, and beavers. The waterfowl is plentiful, too, and includes mergansers, loons, and egrets.
Hiking
There are three hiking trails within Elmore State Park. The Mountain Brook Nature Trail is just a half mile long and flat and easy. The Fire Tower Trail leads to the watch tower and several scenic overlooks. It's 1.75 miles long and is challenging. Alternatively, the Ridge Trail is 2.3 miles long and takes a less demanding route to the tower and vantage points.
Boating
The campground doesn't have a boat launch, but across the lake, there is a concrete launch that is just right for most boats. Closer to the campground, you can set out in light boats like kayaks or canoes right from the beach.
Swimming
Throughout the summer, the lake's water temperature will be in the 70s, which is just right for taking a dip to escape the heat. It is a great place to take kids because the water is shallow along the shoreline. In addition, the sandy beach offers plenty of room for people who enjoy basking in the sun.
Climbing
Elmore Mountain has four vertical climbs, two for top-roping and two with bolted routes for sports climbing. They are advanced climbs rated between 5.9 and 5.10. The most difficult of the four is ASSend to Victory, which is rated 5.10b. It is strongly recommended not to attempt these climbs unless you are experienced.
