Situated just east of Aiken, South Carolina, Aiken State Park is a lovely outdoor recreation area known for its stunning natural beauty and fascinating history. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the park during the Great Depression. It sits on the banks of the South Edisto River and is known as an excellent destination for activities like kayaking, canoeing and fishing. The park tends to be quite warm and balmy during the summer months, but it experiences mild temperatures during the other seasons. Aiken State Park features several unique attractions, including an orienteering course and three artesian fountains that visitors can drink from. Some of the other amenities you can check out are the swimming area, a gift shop, horseshoe pits and a playground.

Aiken State Park Campgrounds
You don't have to leave this state park when you book an RV site. Every site consists of packed sand, and there are individual water and electric hookups. Some of these campsites can accommodate a rig up to 35 feet in length. Throughout the campground, there are comfort stations with hot showers and restrooms. There is even a dump station located near the grounds. If you want a more primitive location, Aiken State Park has a few sites for the night. All the campsites include a picnic table and fire ring.

Pine Acres Campground
If you want to stay out of the state park for the night, then you might want to secure a spot at Pine Acres Campground. This RV campground is just outside of Aiken. The campground has 43 sites that can accommodate rigs up to 40 feet in length. Most of the sites offer full hookups. Since the manager lives on the property, you never have to worry about maintenance or other issues. For some added comfort and convenience, this campground is equipped with modern showers and restrooms. Propane is also available for purchase from the office. Good Sam and AARP members can receive some discounts on the nightly fees. If you are not a member of those clubs, the daily rates start at $30 per night.

Twin Magnolia RV Park
Twin Magnolia RV Park is located in North Augusta, and it is a great spot for your next relaxing getaway. This park does cater to the long-term renter, but you can book a spot for the night or month. All the sites feature 30/50-amp electric, television, and phone hookups. If you want a clean and well-maintained campground for your trip, this is the ideal location.

What to Do at
Aiken State Park
If want to have some water-based fun, you could spend your visit fishing, kayaking or canoeing in the South Edisto River. The park even offers rentals for fishing boats, canoes and pedal boats, which come with life jackets and paddles. If you'd rather relax at the park, you could enjoy a peaceful meal in one of the picnic shelters or observe some of the area's local birds. Aiken State Park also has several scenic hiking trails, which offer wonderful views of the surrounding landscape. If you have the kids with you during your visit, they'll definitely want to spend some time enjoying the park's playground.

Inside Aiken State Park
The South Edisto River winds through Aiken State Park. For that reason, this state park is a popular destination for water-based activities. However, motorized boats are not allowed on the public lakes. You can take a canoe and paddle down the river. In addition to that, this state park is the perfect spot to hike around and see the scenic landscape.
Fishing
There are several excellent fishing destinations around Aiken State Park. You could cast your line in either the South Edisto River or one of the park's four peaceful lakes. The fish species people most commonly reel in include bream, bass and catfish. You'll need a valid South Carolina fishing license to fish in the park.
Geocaching
Geocaching is permitted in the park and is popular among visitors. Several geocaches are scattered around the park.
Nature Watching
Aiken State Park is home to quite a few interesting animals. Some of the known species in the area include nine-banded armadillos, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, deer, skunks, bears and wild hogs. There are also many interesting bird species around the park, such as Canada geese, woodpeckers, little blue herons, northern cardinals, Acadian flycatchers and many others.
Flora and Fauna
Aiken State Park features different ecosystems and plenty of unique vegetation. The park is a combination of a river swamp, a bottomland hardwood forest and a dry sandhill pine forest. During your visit, you'll want to check out the variety of colorful wildflowers that dot the landscape.
Hiking
The state park has several fantastic hiking trails to explore. The most popular is the Jungle Nature Trail, which is around 3 miles and quite easy for most hikers to navigate. The route also takes hikers through gorgeous scenery, including tropical-looking wetlands and dense rhododendrons.
Boating
The South Edisto River and the park's four lakes are all popular boating destinations, and you can rent a canoe, fishing boat or pedal boat right at the park. If you crave a bit more excitement, the park also has stand-up paddleboards available for rental.
Swimming
Aiken State Park features a swimming area, which is open between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. There is no lifeguard on duty, so visitors must swim at their own risk.

To reach Aiken State Park from I-20 eastbound, take Exit 22 onto Highway 1 toward Aiken. Take Highway 1 to Highway 78, and you'll see signs for Aiken State Park.
Entering Aiken State Park
The park charges a $3 entry fee for adults, $1.50 for seniors, and $1 for children between the ages of 6 and 15. Children under 6 can enter the park for free. Besides the on-site parking lot, additional parking is available at the park's campground.
