Maumee Bay State Park officially opened its doors to the public in 1975 after the state of Ohio bought much of its land in 1974. This state park borders Maumee Bay, which is part of Lake Erie. Downtown Toledo, Interstate 75, and Interstate 90 are only 20 minutes away. The park comprises more than 1,300 acres, so there's plenty of room to explore shorelines, wetlands, marshes and more. What to Do at
Maumee Bay State Park

If you want to go golfing on a beautiful course that was crafted in the "Scottish Links" style, then you should check out the Maumee Bay State Park Golf Course. There's also a seven-lane archery range, and winter sports include cross-country skiing, sledding, ice skating and snow hiking. The Lake Erie beach area has multiple excellent picnicking and grilling places that you can use for cooking and eating after you've worked up an appetite exploring the park.

Please note that the Nature Center and the large loop of the Boardwalk Trail are undergoing renovations and will reopen in the spring and summer of 2024, respectively. Contact the park office at 419-836-7758 for answers to any questions.

Inside Maumee Bay State Park

Maumee Bay State Park might be very popular for camping, but people also flock here because of the wide range of fun outdoor activities on offer. Whether you’re hoping to enjoy hiking, boating, swimming, golfing, or more – there’s certainly something for every type of traveler at Maumee Bay. 

Hiking : The park contains acres of meadow, marshland and woodland, and the best way to explore this is through hiking the multiple trails on offer. One of these includes the Mouse Trail, a 3-mile diverse trail winding through meadows and young woodlands. There are also several miles of paved combination trails for bicycling and cross-country skiing, as well as a boardwalk.

Boating : Lake Erie provides 57 acres of inland lake that is suitable for canoeing and other non-motorized boat use. Canoes, paddle boats and row boats are also available for rent.

Swimming : The state park has two sand beaches which are ideal for swimming. One beach is located on the Lake Erie shore while the other lines the park's inland lake. 

Golfing : There is an 18-hole "Scottish Links" style golf course located in the state park. Players can expect low, rolling mounds, bent grass fairways, greens and tees, numerous sand bunkers and ponds. Lessons, golf outings, and a golf pro-shop are also available.

Winter sports : When it snows at the state park, there are still plenty of fun activities to be enjoyed, including cross-country skiing, winter nature walks, ice skating, ice fishing, and sledding on the area's top-rated sledding hill.

Fishing Fishing

If you drop a line in Lake Erie, then you may find out why people call it the "Walleye Capital of the World." Other fish you can catch in Lake Erie include bass, drum and catfish. You can also fish at the inland lake and the canoeing lake, which both hold bass, crappie and bluegill. You will need an Ohio fishing license to fish here.

Geocaching Geocaching

Multiple caches are located within Maumee Bay State Park. Most of the caches can be found near the Erie shoreline and the boardwalk.

Nature Watching Nature Watching

Birding is popular here thanks to the presence of more than 300 species of birds within the park. The best place to see these birds is the Trautman Nature Center, which features an indoor viewing area and a boardwalk trail that are ideal for watching a wide variety of birds.

Stargazing Stargazing

Between the beach, boardwalk and trails, Maumee Bay State Park has many stellar locations for stargazing. Don't forget to bring your camera with you so that you can take some once-in-a-lifetime shots of the heavens.

Flora and Fauna

At Maumee Bay State Park, you'll have the chance to see plants like cottonwoods, willows and cattails. Animals that live in the park include frogs, butterflies, snakes, raccoons and deer.

Hiking Hiking

Several of the trails in the park are open to foot traffic only. The Interpretive Boardwalk and the Storybook and Mouse Trails are for hikers only. Hikers can also share the bike path and the multi-use trail with bikers.

Boating

Lake Erie is a beautiful place to take your motorized boat as you can dock it at the Maumee Bay Lodge Marina for convenience. The best place to take your canoe, kayak, rowboat or paddleboat is the inland lake. Boat rentals are available for those without their own crafts.

Swimming Swimming

You can go swimming on Lake Erie and the inland lake at two designated swimming beaches. Both beaches have restrooms, sun shelters and showers located nearby. If you stay at the park's lodge, then you can take advantage of its swimming pool.

Biking

The bike path and the multi-use trail are both open to bikers, but you must share these trails with hikers and joggers. You can rent a bike at the park if you don't have your own with you.

How to Get to
Maumee Bay State Park

If you're coming from Toledo, take State Route 65 to Craig Bridge Street, and cross the Maumee River. Turn left onto Front Street, and turn right onto Millard Avenue. Turn left on Otter Creek Road before turning right onto Cedar Point Road. Turn right onto North Curtice Road, and drive to the park's entrance.

Entering Maumee Bay State Park

You don't have to pay to enter Maumee Bay State Park since all Ohio state parks offer free admission.

Parking is available in 14 parking areas that are scattered throughout the park. You'll be able to park close to the camp office/park store, the campground, the beach, the inland lake, the Trautman Nature Center and more.
