The park follows the course of the Genesee River as it winds its way through the landscape, providing visitors with the chance to glimpse several stunning waterfalls along with its miles of backcountry trails. These falls cascade along the sides of the steep gorge carved by the river throughout the ages, giving the area the unique distinction and honor of being considered the “Grand Canyon of the East.” It was even voted New York state’s best attraction in 2017 -- and considering all the amazing things to see and do in the Empire State, that’s a pretty serious distinction!
Along with waterfalls that sometimes tower as high as 600 feet above the river below, and all the fun summertime activities this water landscape affords, Letchworth State Park is also renowned for its winter sports opportunities. Snow tubing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling are all popular diversions throughout the state’s lengthy freeze season, and guests can enjoy thawing out and refreshing at the historic Glen Iris Inn, which is open seasonally for overnight stays as well as breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Inside Letchworth State Park
With three major waterfalls and more than 50 smaller ones along the tributaries that feed the park’s river, one of the most significant pastimes at Letchworth State Park is simply seeing it. There’s a reason it’s considered one of the most worthy attractions in the entire state of New York.
But along with just wandering through the landscape in wonder, outdoor adventurers of all fitness and interest levels can find fulfilling diversions within the park’s boundaries. Here are just a few of the opportunities available.
Hiking - Letchworth State Park offers more than 66 miles of hiking trails, which are also open to horseback riders, mountain bikers, and, in the winter, cross-country skiers and snowmobilers.
Guided tours and lectures are offered by the Humphrey Nature Center, an on-site educational organization devoted to helping people get more familiar with the park and learn how best to protect this one-of-a-kind landscape.
Whitewater rafting and kayaking are popular along the Genesee River rapids.
Hot air ballooning is also facilitated by a variety of organizations in the area, and offers once-in-a-lifetime, breathtaking views of the “Grand Canyon of the East.”
Historic sites and museums dot the park from end to end, including Mount Morris Dam in the north and Glen Iris Inn, which was William Pryor Letchworth's former residence. Today, it’s been fully renovated and serves as a hotel and dining spot for park visitors, open for overnight lodging seasonally.
How to Get to
Letchworth State Park
Letchworth State Park is located just west of New York’s I-390, close to where the highway intersects with Route 36 and Route 408. It’s easy to access from a variety of communities in the area, only 35 miles southwest of Rochester and 60 miles southeast of Buffalo.
Entering Letchworth State Park
Entrances to Letchworth State Park are located in four adjacent towns: Mt. Morris, Perry, Castile, and Portageville. The entry fee s $10 per non-commercial vehicle, though this doesn’t cover additional services and sightseeing, such as overnight camping ($24-$26 per night) or access to the on-site museum ($1 donation for adult entry). New York residents might consider picking up an Empire Pass, which, for $80, gets you a year of unlimited access to Letchworth State Park as well as a host of other wildernesses and facilities managed by the New York State Parks Department and the Department of Environmental Conservation. Letchworth State Park is in a temperate climate. Winter temperatures get down to around 15 degrees but usually jump above freezing during the day. Summer temperatures hit a high of around 80 degrees. Rain occurs year-round, with precipitation happening during a quarter of all days.
The grasslands are prime habitat for local birds. Upland sandpipers, Henslow's sparrows, and northern harriers all nest in the park. Red foxes, coyotes, cottontail rabbits, woodchucks, and white-tailed deer roam the woods. Beavers are often spotted in the wetlands.
The Letchworth State Park campground offers 257 campsites for RV camping. There are spots capable of accommodating 50-foot trailers. Electrical hookups are available at each spot. The bathhouses offer flush toilets, and there is a dump station on-site.
Pets are allowed in some camping spots, with a limit of two pets per spot. Dogs must be leashed when outdoors. The trails are considered dog-friendly, so get some exercise with your pet.
