It’s a popular destination for both bird watchers and fishermen, and many of its facilities and trails are dog-friendly as well. And best of all, it’s nestled right on the New York/New Jersey border, only an hour or so from the center of Manhattan. Considering its generous size, it’s not surprising that Harriman State Park offers an abundance of camping opportunities and amenities for tent campers and RVers alike. Beaver Pond Campground can accommodate RVs of up to 30 feet in length, with grills, picnic areas, and full-service bathrooms centrally available.
However, the park doesn’t offer electrical or water hookups, and many large Class A models fall outside of its size restrictions. Plus, as in almost all public park scenarios, sites tend to fill up quickly -- so we’ve put together a few more options for you to choose from in the area.
Black Bear Campground
Located about twenty minutes away from the park’s northern entrance, Black Bear Campground is a great resort-style park to consider if you’re looking for an all-inclusive experience. The park is open year-round and offers all the modern amenities you could ask for, including full hookups of up to 50 amps of service as well as on-site laundry facilities and activities. They also organize guided excursions to New York City, just in case you do want a taste of the urban life while you’re in town. The park is a Good Sam Club member, and discounts are also available for veterans, AARP members, and other select camping organizations.

Highland Falls RV Park and Marina
Situated directly on the scenic Hudson River, Highland Falls RV Park and Marina features 24-hour security so you can rest in ease -- and comfort, since you’ll also be hooked up to full shore power and water. The park also offers onsite restrooms and free campground-wide wifi, so you can stay connected throughout your stay. Sites start at a super-affordable $49.95 per night, and the park is open seasonally between May and November. Along with accessing Harriman State Park itself, you’ll also be within easy driving distance of West Point Military Academy, as well as a variety of historical battlegrounds in the area.

Harriman State Park is one of those places where you don’t have to look too hard to find adventure. With its sprawling network of forest-covered trails and numerous bodies of water, there’s something to suit every outdoor lover on board your camper. Here are some of the most popular diversions:
Hiking and biking are very common outdoor ventures -- and given that the park has 200 miles of trails to explore, it’s no surprise that adventurers take to its backcountry both on foot and on wheels. Dogs with current rabies tags and leashes are welcome on the trails as well, so don’t forget to bring Fido.
Museums and visitors centers dot the park, offering fun and educational opportunities to visitors and campers of all ages. Grills and gift shops are also available, so you don’t have to worry about returning to civilization just to get your basic needs met.
Boating, swimming, and other water sports are popular in Harriman State Park, which boasts 31 lakes and reservoirs as well as two dedicated public beach areas. Whether it’s a serene paddling journey or an exciting day of fishing, you can choose one of the park’s many waterways to enjoy your favorite aquatic adventure.
Winter sports like cross-country skiing and ice fishing are also performed in the park, since it’s open to the public all year round. Many of the water surfaces freeze over hard enough to accommodate ice skaters, as well!

Entering Harriman State Park
Unlike many state parks, you won’t necessarily have to pay a vehicle fee simply to enter the park and enjoy its trails. However, Lakes Welch, Tiorati, Kanawauke, and Silvermine do carry vehicle use fees during the busy summer travel season and on holidays and weekends.
The park is open seven days a week, year round, from sunup until sundown, though certain sections and amenities may close seasonally due to weather.
