Franz Jevne State Park is a small park located in northern Minnesota on the Canadian border. The 118-acre park offers scenic views of the Rainy River as well as Ontario, Canada. Surrounded by a mixed forest, this park offers excellent hiking opportunities along several small loops that take you through the woods and along the river. In the winter, visitors can enjoy groomed cross-country skiing trails as well as snowshoeing throughout the park.

RV Resorts & Campsites in Franz Jevne State Park
Franz Jevne Campground is the lone campground within the park that offers RV camping. It features 18 campsites with two of those sites offering electrical hookups. All of the campsites can accommodate an RV up to 30 feet in length. Visitors will find a fire ring with a grill at each site, and water pumps and vault toilets at the campground.
What to Do at
Franz Jevne State Park
While Franz Jevne State Park may be small compared to other parks in Minnesota, there is still plenty to do within its boundaries. Visitors can enjoy excellent fishing opportunities on the Rainy River while taking in breathtaking views of the river’s rapids and Ontario, Canada. The park also offers several hiking trails, picnic areas and rural walk-in campsites. Boaters can gain access to the river via a boat launch while anglers can use one of the many short walking paths to find a good fishing spot.
Fishing
Anglers can cast a line in hopes of catching walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass and sturgeon in the Rainy River. Short paths and a boat launch provide access to the water. A Minnesota fishing license is required.
Geocaching
Geocaching is available in Minnesota state parks. If you are looking to hide a geocache, you need to obtain a permit from the DNR.
Nature Watching
The combination of the Rainy River and mixed forest provides an excellent habitat for wildlife including songbirds and woodpeckers. Pelicans can be seen on the water while bald eagles soar overhead. Beavers, wolves and moose have also been seen in the park.
Stargazing
The remote location of the park makes it an excellent place to stargaze. Visitors do not need to worry about any light pollution causing an issue when it comes to viewing your favorite constellations.
Flora and Fauna
The forest is filled with jack pine and birch trees. Hikers can find a variety of plants along the Rock Outcrop Trail including juniper, white spruce and blueberry.
Hiking
There are two trails within the park that cover 2.25 miles in distance. The River Trails is a variety of loops that total two miles and take hikers through the woods and along the river.
Boating
A boat launch is located on the far east side of the park off of MN-85. Visitors can also use this area to launch a canoe or kayak to float down the river.
How to Get to
Franz Jevne State Park
Franz Jevne State Park is located at State Highway 11, Birchdale, MN 56629. If you are traveling to the park from Bemidji, MN, you will need to take US Hwy 71 N until you reach MN-72 N in Blackduck, MN. Merge onto MN-72 N and travel for 9.7 miles. Next, you will make a right-hand turn onto MN-72 N/State Hwy 1 E. Take this road until you reach Shooks, MN where you will turn left onto MN-72 N. Travel along this road for 58.9 miles and then turn right onto Csah 35. Drive another mile and then turn right onto MN-11 E. Take MN-11 E for 25.3 miles and then turn left onto Co Rd 85. Once you are on Co Rd 85, the park entrance will be on your right-hand side.
Entering Franz Jevne State Park
The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. As you enter the park, you will pass the camper registration area and find two parking areas on either side of the road. The first parking area on the right leads to a small loop of campsites as well as a picnic area and shelter. If you continue driving straight after entering the park, you will run into the main campground loop with another parking area and access to the hiking loops.
