- Palmetto Island State Park
Palmetto Island State Park is on a patch of higher ground surrounded by swamp and the Vermillion River, making it the perfect place for RV vacationers to receive a real South Louisiana outdoors experience. Palmettos, those shaggy, tropical trees, grow alongside tall cypress trees and other Louisiana native plants, giving the architectural elements around the park an air of authenticity. The palmetto was a crucial material for the Native Americans who once lived here as they made the walls and roof of their hut by weaving them. This 1,299-acre park is the perfect habitat for various wildlife, including rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs, skunks, and other small game animals. In the bayou area, you may see alligators swimming just a few feet from where you're standing, making it a new exciting adventure for the whole family. Cities within the vicinity of Palmetto Island State Park are Abbeville, Egan, and New Iberia.
