- North Toledo Bend State Park
During the early 1950s, it became evident to both the Texas and Louisiana legislatures that something had to be done about the erosion, property damage, and life-threatening conditions along the Sabine River, which served as part of their shared border. The two states took it upon themselves, without any federal help, to build the largest reservoir in the South and the fifth-largest in the United States. North Toledo Bend State Park covers 900 acres on the Louisiana side of the 185,000-acre reservoir, often referred to as Toledo Bend Lake. Once a reservoir for fresh drinking water, a power production resource, and a water control mechanism, today, the reservoir serves to attract visitors from all over the country to pursue its excellent fishing, seasonal scenic extravaganza, and wondrous hiking trails. To approach the park, visitors must travel through Zwolle, LA. Texas and Shreveport, Louisiana, are also nearby.
