In northern Idaho, where the Benewah, Chatcolet, and Hidden Lakes converge with St. Joe River, you’ll find Heyburn State Park, the oldest state park in the Pacific Northwest. This 8,000-acre park boasts towering ponderosa pines, meadows dotted with wildflowers, and lakes with sparkling blue waters. The Coeur d’Alene Indians first inhabited the area, where they fished from the well-stocked lakes and hunted for deer and other animals in the surrounding marshland and forests. President Taft later designated the area as a state park in 1908, named after Idaho politician and U.S. Senator W.B. Heyburn.
Visitors can partake in recreational activities year-round at Heyburn State Park including hiking, biking, horseback riding, boating, swimming, and bird watching. The Trail of the Coeur d' Alenes is a popular regional hiking and biking trail that runs directly through the park, while shorter trails loop around the lakes and through mountainous terrain and forests of cedar, hemlock, and pine. At Heyburn State Park, visitors will find ample activities to keep them busy year-round, whether playing in the sparkling waters of the Benewah, Chatcolet, and Hidden Lakes or hiking and biking through mountainous terrain and thick forests of ponderosa pines, hemlocks, and cedars. During the winter, the lakes freeze over, making them ideal for ice fishing, as well as wildlife viewing and hunting in the marshlands and forests.

Hiking and Biking - Grab your hiking shoes or mountain bike and head to the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, a popular 72-mile regional trail that runs partly through the park. Cross over a 3,100-ft bridge and see spectacular views of the St Joe River, Benewah Lake, and surrounding area. Bike rentals are available at the park’s headquarters. Shorter trails loop through the park including the 3-mile Indian Cliffs loop — a more strenuous hike that affords outstanding views at the top. Several trails are also open for horseback riding, if you bring your own horse.
Water Sports - The park’s 2,300+ acres of lakefront make it easy to spend the afternoon on the water. Go for a refreshing swim in the park’s swimming areas, launch your own boat into the waters, or rent a kayak, paddleboard, or canoe at the marina. The well-stocked lakes are home to many fish species, including trout and bass, and fishing is allowed from the shoreline and boat, although you must have a valid Idaho fishing license.

Heyburn State Park is located on Highway 5 between the towns of Plummer and St Maries.
From Highway 95, travel to Plummer, then take Highway 5 east for about 6 miles. At the bottom of a steep winding grade, take a left onto Chatcolet Road to reach the park’s entrance.
