Inside Malibu Creek State Park
Malibu Creek State Park has a deep history. The first known occupants of the area were the Chumash Indians. In fact, many of the hiking trails were originally footpaths that the Chumash would use to travel from village to village and from inland areas to the sea. Recently, the Sepulveda Adobe that was constructed in 1863 and restored in 2003 was damaged in the November 2018 Woolsey Fire. Restoration on the park has begun, though nature has left its mark. Many people call this park “The Yosemite of Southern California.” Its stunning terrain has made it a popular place for filming movies and television.
Malibu Creek is full of nostalgic opportunities and memorable experiences:
M*A*S*H – Malibu Creek State Park proudly boasts their trails in and around the land that shot the legendary TV program between 1972-1983. The landmark has been restored over the years and the iconic ambulance, the vehicle road to the helipad and spaces where tents and buildings were placed during the show are all visible.
Reagan Ranch – An equestrian dream is in the works here. This will be a base camp for horse trails through the parks, but you can still visit the iconic 300-plus acre ranch of Ronald and Nancy Reagan. It was severely damaged in the November 2018 Woolsey Fire, but you can still view the area.
Hiking – The park’s trails have something for everyone – from novices to those looking for real challenges. The easy routes wind through the valleys, and the challenging trails climb the walls of those valleys.
Biking – With plentiful steep terrain, Malibu Creek is a great place for serious mountain bikers. But, beginners can have fun along the main hiking trail through the park.
Rock Climbing – There are many great climbs, but the easiest to reach is the Planet of the Apes Wall – where scenes from “Apes” were filmed.
Kayaking – Century Lake is named after the 20th Century Fox Studios who owned the land before it was a state park. A small finger lake, it is perfect for casual paddling.
