Located on the east side of Tahoe City, California, the Tahoe State Recreation Area provides a bike path into the city with gorgeous views of Lake Tahoe. This area, located 14 miles southeast of Donner Pass, California, is a great place to relax and enjoy watching the sunset over the lake. Bring along the kids because they will love participating in the junior ranger programs. You can also use the trail system to access Lake Tahoe, which is the second deepest lake in the United States.

This park is located on Highway 28 about one-quarter mile east of Tahoe City. If you are in Tahoe City, take Lake Boulevard North, and you will see the park on your left.

For RVers, summer is the best time to visit Tahoe State Recreation Area. Campers can enjoy swimming, kayaking, windsurfing, and fishing during this warm season. Hikers and bikers can take trails to scenic viewpoints.
During the winter and early spring, it can be freezing cold and very snowy with occasional windy blizzards. In the summer, it can hit the 80s. In fall, the warm days can still reach the mid-70s, but the nights land in the 30s.
Bird watchers may spot mountain chickadees, bald eagles, and red-tailed hawks. Mule deer, coyotes, or yellow-bellied marmots may cross your path, and this is black bear country. Anglers might catch rainbow, lake, or brook trout and kokanee.
There are 23 designated RV sites at Tahoe State Recreation Area for motorhomes up to 21 feet. It is dry camping. There are no hookups or dump stations. The campground closes from late September to May.
Pets are permitted at Tahoe State Recreation Area. Leashed dogs are allowed at the day-use area along the shore, at the “Gatekeepers” portion of the Truckee River outlet, and on paved trails. Service animals are permitted in all public spaces.
