Sycamore Canyon Campground and Thornhill Broome State Beach Campground
Located inside Point Mugu State Park, these campgrounds are the perfect home base for visitors. Thornhill Broome offers the best views of the sea. In fact, each of the 75 campsites overlooks the water. Facilities are basic—they’re limited to drop toilets—but the proximity to the water is a big advantage if you’re hoping for a morning bodysurfing session. Sycamore Canyon provides more perks, including hot showers, flush toilets, and an RV sanitation station. Families love the nature center that sits just inside the entrance. This is a great option if you’re hoping to hike. Plus, the beach is directly across the highway. Both campgrounds can accommodate RVs up to 31 feet long. Prices start at $35 per night; make sure to reserve well in advance.
Malibu Beach RV Park
Camp in luxury at Malibu Beach RV Park, which is located about 20 miles south on Highway 1. If you’re after amenities, this is the place to be—your site rental gives you access to a laundry room, dump station, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and a handy park store for essentials. Each of the 142 RV sites comes with a picnic table and a view of the ocean or mountains. You can even choose the view you’d like during the booking process. All RV sites include full or partial hookups and cable TV, so it’s easy to relax after a long day. As you’re booking this campground, keep in mind that every site has a different capacity, both in terms of RV size and the available car parking. Bring your big rig—the park can accommodate RVs up to 42 feet long. Prices start at $45 a night for a mountain-view site with water and 30-amp electric hookups.
Malibu Creek State Park Campground
Malibu Creek State Park Campground is a lovely spot surrounded by lush green hills. If you’re a fan of the TV show “M*A*S*H,” you might recognize the landscape—before it was a park, the area was a filming location for the show. Book one of the 63 campsites and wake up to views of the Conejo Volcanics and the lush California greenery. This campground can accommodate RVs up to 30 feet long. Just steps from your site, you’ll find hiking trails, hot showers, flush toilets, and a campfire center that’s popular with families. You won’t find hookups, but there’s an RV sanitation station on-site for convenience. Prices start at $45 per night for up to eight people; it’s a good idea to make reservations as early as possible. You'll also be charged a $7.99 reservation fee.

If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, Point Mugu State Park has plenty of activities to fill a weekend, week, or longer. On warm days, head down to Point Mugu Beach; after you’re done exploring the shore, try bodysurfing or surf fishing. Afterward, lace up your hiking boots and set out onto the 70-mile trail network. Enjoy the views on the easy Scenic and Overlook Trails loop. For a longer trek into the Boney Mountain State Wilderness, take the Serrano Canyon Trail or the challenging Backbone Trail.

Whether you’re coming from the north or the south, the only way to get to Point Mugu State Park is via Highway 1. The park is located directly off the highway in front of the Mugu Peak.

Point Mugu State Park is open all year. If you’re coming on a daytrip, the parking lots at Sycamore Cove and Mugu Beach open at 8:00 a.m. and close as soon as the sun goes down. If you’re camping at Sycamore Canyon or Thornhill Broome, the gates close at 10:00 p.m. They open again at 8:00 a.m.
