- Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park
Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park is part of northern California's Redwood National and State Parks system. Long before it was a popular outdoor recreation destination, the indigenous Tolowa and Yurok people frequented the land at Del Norte. These people, who lived in most of Oregon and northern California, used the area to harvest local foods, such as salmon, steelhead trout, clams, deer, elk, berries, and acorns. The park officially opened in 1925 and was expanded in 2002 to the 31,261-acre size it is today. Highlights of the park include eight miles of Pacific coastline and old-growth redwood forests. Elevations in the park range from sea level to upwards of 1,200 feet. The landscape includes impressive cliffs along the rocky beaches that are formed of sandstone, shale, serpentine, chert, and greenstone.
