- Slide Rock State Park
Slide Rock State Park was originally an apple orchard located next to Oak Creek in Oak Creek Canyon. Frank Pendley acquired the 43-acre plot of land through the Homestead Act in 1910. He established an irrigation system and planted an apple orchard and gardens and kept livestock. After paved roads to the area were added, Pendley built cabins for visiting tourists. Today, visitors can still enjoy eating apples from the orchards, take a dip in Oak Creek by sliding down Slide Rock and walk along the many trails along the creek. Slide Rock State Park is ideally situated in Central Arizona between Flagstaff and Sedona and is close to many other attractions in the area, such as the Grand Canyon, and features mild winters and hot summers typical of this part of the state, with average highs in the high 50s in winter and high 90s in summer.
