Congaree National Park is 45 minutes from Santee, South Carolina. The big draw here is the old-growth hardwood forest, which contains some of America's largest, oldest trees. As you're hiking on the pathways in the park or boating down the Congaree River, you may pass by trees that are over 1,000 years old. Some of the trees here are the largest of their kind locally or even nationally. They're also home to a variety of local wildlife. 

Great Smoky Mountains National Park  

You can reach Great Smoky Mountains National Park by traveling three hours and 50 minutes from Santee or by leaving straight from Congaree and driving three hours and 25 minutes. No matter which way you choose to drive to America's most frequently visited national park, you'll have plenty of awesome options for adventure once you get there, making it a must for your Savannah to Killington road trip itinerary. Shenandoah National Park  

At Shenandoah National Park, 300 square miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains await you at this lovely park that's just an hour and 15 minutes west of Fredericksburg, VA. Traveling on Skyline Drive is a popular way to see some of this park, especially when the leaves change colors in the fall. If you'd prefer to get out in nature, then you can hike, bike, or ride on hundreds of miles of trails within the park. A 100-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail is in the park as well, so this is a top-notch place to hike on the famous trail. 

Cuyahoga Valley National Park  

If you're up to the task of traveling an additional five and a half hours northwest of Washington, D.C. on your Savannah to Killington RV road trip, you can visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which is home to 100 waterfalls. When you're not gazing in wonder at the various falls in the park, you can hop on a boat and float or fish your way down the Cuyahoga River. If you'd prefer to spend more time on dry land, then the park's 125 miles of trails await. If rails are more your speed, then you can tour some of this gorgeous national park on a scenic railroad.

Little Fishing Creek lives up to its name and is an awesome place to go fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.

Lake Anna State Park  

You can reach Lake Anna State Park by driving 25 minutes west of Woodford, VA. Swimming in Lake Anna is, of course, popular here. The swimming beach features a bathhouse, a snack bar, and a lifeguard. You can go fishing on Lake Anna, and you can also take your children to a 2-acre fishing pond on the premises. If you visit at the right time, you can go panning for gold and take a guided tour of the Goodwin Gold Mine.

Elk Neck State Park  

Should you desire to add the northern part of Chesapeake Bay to your Savannah to Killington road trip itinerary, then you'll want to visit Elk Neck State Park. Since the park itself is located on a peninsula that juts out into the Chesapeake Bay, there are plenty of awesome places to go fishing, swimming, and boating here.
