Sequoia National Park  

Since Sequoia National Park is only about 15 minutes from Kings Canyon, how could you not visit it on your Sacramento to St. George RV road trip? In addition to getting to marvel at even more of the enormous sequoias, you’ll also be able to experience the majesty of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. If you’re visiting during the winter, don’t forget to bring your skis and snowshoes so that you can use them in the park. More than 800 miles of trails provide you with plenty of opportunities to explore this gorgeous area. 

Joshua Tree National Park  

If you drive about an hour and a half to the southeast of Barstow, you’ll reach the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. This California park is, of course, known for its distinctive Joshua trees, but it’s also full of great mountain and desert scenery and wildlife. Visitors enjoy exploring this rugged park by hiking, biking, and backcountry camping. Those in search of less-strenuous activities may enjoy the great bird-watching and stargazing opportunities to be found here. 

Death Valley National Park  

Death Valley National Park is located an hour and a half north of Baker, California. If you want to add “visit one of the world’s most extreme, inhospitable environments” to your road trip itinerary from Sacramento to St. George, then stopping by this park is a must. Every year, numerous visitors come to Death Valley to pit themselves against the elements while exploring the amazing desert landscape here. At this park, you can set off on the adventure of your choosing by going wherever you want. Even if you don’t want to wander around this desert, you can take advantage of the multiple marked trails in the park.

Turlock Lake State Recreation Area  

Turlock Lake State Recreation Area is only a 40-minute drive east of Modesto. This lovely park on Turlock Lake and the Tuolumne River is perfect for boating, swimming, and fishing. If you’d prefer to stay dry, you can focus on hiking and biking on the multiple trails in the park. Stargazing and picnicking are also popular activities here. 

Millerton Lake State Recreation Area  

Half an hour east of Madera is Millerton Lake State Recreation Area. The park is centered around Lake Millerton, which is a great place to swim, boat, and fish. The trails are perfect for hiking and mountain biking, and the park itself is home to many interesting species of animals. 

Saddleback Butte State Park  

Saddleback Butte State Park can easily be reached by traveling 35 minutes south of North Edwards. Joshua Tree National Park is the best place in California to see Joshua Trees, but you’ll be able to see plenty of them at Saddleback Butte as well. Hiking is immensely popular here thanks to the park’s great trails and, of course, the presence of Saddleback Butte itself. Horseback riding, stargazing, and wildlife spotting are other popular activities here.

Valley of Fire State Park  

Half an hour southeast of Glendale, Nevada, is the stunning Valley of Fire State Park. The park’s name is no exaggeration thanks to the breathtaking red rock formations that can literally appear to be on fire when the sunlight hits them. This is a great place to explore via car or on foot. Flora, fauna, and petroglyphs abound in this 46,000-acre park that dazzles in the Mojave Desert. 

Snow Canyon State Park  

Just before the end of your road trip from Sacramento to St. George, you should visit Snow Canyon State Park. It’s only 20 minutes from Bloomington, Utah, so it’s a great place to go to prolong your journey. Red and white sandstone and ancient lava flows combine to create an incredible environment that’s both fascinating and peaceful. Hiking, biking, camping, and horseback riding are preferred activities here.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo  

Seven minutes from downtown Fresno you’ll find the Fresno Chaffee Zoo isn't far off your path. The zoo contains more than 200 species that live in exhibits like Zoorassic Park, African Adventure, Twiga Terrace, and Stingray Bay. You can also experience animal encounters with sea lions, giraffes, and more.

Six Flags Magic Mountain  

Six Flags Magic Mountain is located just outside of Santa Clarita and is roughly half an hour southeast of Lebec. This Six Flags park is home to excellent rides like Apocalypse, Ninja, Tatsu, and Viper. If you go during the holidays, you’ll get to see the park lit up with millions of lovely Christmas lights. 

Mojave National Preserve  

While you should definitely head north of Baker so you can visit Death Valley National Park, you only have to drive four minutes in the other direction from Baker in order to view amazing desert scenery at Mojave National Preserve. The beauty of the Mojave Desert is on full display and is open to you via developed and undeveloped trails. Kelso Dunes, Hole-in-the-Wall, and Barber Peak are some places to visit here. 

Lake Mead National Recreation Area  

Nature might be the last thing on your mind while you’re experiencing the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas, but if you venture 25 minutes outside of town, you’ll get to experience the beauty of Lake Mead National Recreation Area. You’ll have no problem finding plenty to do within this 1.5-million-acre park. Lake Mead, Lake Mojave, and Hoover Dam await you at this park that is less than half an hour from Sin City.

Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument  

Before you head into Downtown St. George for the end of your Sacramento to St. George RV road trip, you should travel 25 miles south of St. George’s outskirts to Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. You don’t have to drive all the way to Grand Canyon National Park in order to view some of this stunning national treasure. Sites like the Grand Canyon, the Grand Wash Cliffs, and Pakoon Springs await.

Stockton, California
