If you are visiting in the summer or fall months, go hiking or take a trip around the rim of the lake. In the winter, you can enjoy snowshoe or ski trails. Redwood National Park

Redwood National Park is just a few hours west of Interstate 5 heading toward the California coast. Follow the signs toward the coast. This is a huge area offering a wide variety of attractions. Redwoods are some of the tallest trees on the planet, and walking among them will give you a sense of awe and serenity. The area is lush with moss, ferns, and various undergrowth. Be sure to wear a jacket and non-slip shoes since it can get damp and chilly, but the area is definitely worth the extra drive. 

Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park in California centers around a fascinating volcano with hydrothermal sites and acres of mud pots bubbling around you. There is plenty to explore with wildflower meadows and gorgeous lakes in the park. You do want to make sure you fill your gas tank before getting here since there are no fuel facilities in the park. You can get all the information you need at the visitor center, and don't forget to check out the Loomis Museum. Spring is the best time of year to spot wildlife, view the flowers, and do some backpacking.

Elijah Bistro State Park

Elijah Bistro State Park is located on the Willamette River near Eugene, Oregon. It is named after one of the first settlers in Lane County. The park is 847 acres full of woods, meadows, and wetlands. This is a great place to take a break, have a picnic, and spend time in nature. Depending on what time of year you go, there is steelhead running for great fishing. You will also spot a variety of birds, including great blue herons and bald eagles. There is other animal life in the park as well, including beavers and turtles. This park offers a beautiful break from the road. 

Castle Crags State Park

Castle Crags State Park is north of Redding in Castella, California. These crags rise from 2,000 feet along the Sacramento River up to 6,500 feet at the tallest crag. The stunning display makes for a great photo op while you get out and stretch your legs. This beautiful area offers a place to picnic and camp or just take a little time to hike and fish. If you are ready for a real challenge, try the Crags Trail, which goes to the base of Castle Dome.

Shasta State Historic Park

Shasta State Historic Park is a fascinating experience in history near Redding, California. This is the site of the old Shasta City and features ruins of what was once a bustling community during the gold mining days. They have restored the County Courthouse building to what it looked like in 1861. It is filled with exhibits and a collection of beautiful historic California artwork. Besides the fascinating historical exhibits, this is also a great place to take in the outdoors and fresh air.

Wildlife Safari

Located just south of Roseburg in Winston, Oregon, the Wildlife Safari is a perfect pit stop along your trip. This is a drive-through experience with 600 acres of animals wandering freely. See giraffes, zebras, bears, and a special elephant exhibit. Once you finish the drive, there is a walk-through courtyard where you can get much closer to the animals. The safari is heavily involved in an important cheetah breeding program. You can even feed the red pandas.

Hellgate Jetboat Excursions

Hellgate Jetboat Excursions is in Grants Pass, Oregon, on the Rogue River. This is one of the first jetboat excursion outfits in the United States, and they offer a fun adventure. The four-hour dinner excursion takes you in a large group boat up the Rogue River through some overwhelmingly scenic beauty. Along the banks, you can spot deer, bald eagles, and osprey. The destination is Hellgate River Lodge, where you are served a delicious country-style dinner on an open-air deck while viewing deer wandering the grounds below. Then you take a fun boat trip back up the river to Grants Pass. 

Mossbrae Falls

Mossbrae Falls is another must-see stop on your road trip from Portland to Sacramento. The falls are in Dunsmuir, California. They pour out of Shasta Springs and into the Sacramento River. This is one of the most scenic waterfalls in California, and it's accessed by hiking in on the trails. This is a great way to take a break from your drive and get some fresh air while enjoying the local scenery.

Main Cities You Will Pass Through

Ashland, Oregon

Ashland, Oregon, is a little town located just over the border of California. It is most widely known for being the home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, but there is plenty more to explore there. At the far end of Ashland is Ashland Creek, which flows through Lithia Park, as well as a fun little shopping plaza. The park is an absolutely gorgeous area with walking trails, a playground, large grassy picnic areas, duck ponds, a rose garden, and a Japanese garden. You can also visit the Science Works Hands-on Museum, check out Emigrant Lake, or go skiing on Mount Ashland.

If you need an RV dump station in Ashland, the most convenient one is probably going to be at the Valero station. They charge $8, but it also has an easy turnaround area. If you would like to camp for the night, there are a few choices out by Emigrant Lake, including the Creekside Campground and RV Park. If you camp out near the lake, be sure to check out the waterslide. 

Yreka, California

Yreka is the county seat of Siskiyou County in Northern California, right over the border with Oregon. This little town is a perfect stop after the grueling climb over the Siskiyou Mountains. Stop by and take a walk around Greenhorn Park or learn about the gold rush days by walking down historic Miner Street. There are some great places to eat as well, so you are sure to enjoy your stay.
