Since Rocky Mountain National Park is just an hour and 40 minutes southwest of Cheyenne, Wyoming, it's definitely worth visiting on your Portland to Ocean City RV road trip. Over 300 miles of hiking trails can take you everywhere, from the summits of Rocky Mountain peaks to the shorelines of alpine lakes. Black bears, moose, elk, marmots, and more all call this park home; maybe you'll see these and many other animals that live in this Rocky Mountain paradise. 

Indiana Sand Dunes National Park  

Indiana Sand Dunes National Park is only 10 minutes off of your route as it goes through Liberty Township, Indiana, so it's a smart addition to your road trip itinerary from Portland to Ocean City. The southern shores of Lake Michigan await you, as do the rugged sand dunes that give the park its name. Boating, fishing, swimming, and watersports are all popular here, thanks to Lake Michigan. Hikers, bikers, and horseback riders enjoy exploring 50 miles of trails that go through 14 separate trail systems. 

Cuyahoga Valley National Park  

Another stunning park that’s close to your route is Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The entrance to this park is just 10 minutes from Richfield Township, Ohio, so you should definitely pay a visit to this home of 100 waterfalls. A hundred miles of the Cuyahoga River is also included in the park, so you'll have plenty of options for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. More than 125 miles of trails are ideal for hiking, biking, and riding, while the scenic railroad is the perfect method of exploration for those who want to tour this park in style. 

Shenandoah National Park  

A little more than an hour from Halfway, Maryland, is Shenandoah National Park. This 300-square-mile park contains Skyline Drive, part of the Appalachian Trail, and a host of scenic mountain vistas. There are plenty of gorgeous trails in this park outside of the Appalachian Trail, many of which are pet-friendly. Forests, mountains, valleys, waterfalls, streams, and more are on display at this outstanding national park. You won't have any trouble finding a great place to park your camper since there are four RV-friendly campsites in the park.

Columbia Hills State Park  

If you want to do a bit of exploring on the Washington side of the Columbia River, then you should cross the river and drive 10 minutes from The Dalles, Oregon, to Columbia Hills State Park. People do, of course, visit this park to experience the Columbia River, but they also come in order to spend time in and on Horsethief Lake. Between these two bodies of water, there are ample places for fishing, swimming, boating, sailboarding, and more. Another awesome landmark here is Horsethief Butte, which is a great place for rock-climbing and petroglyph viewing. 

Curt Gowdy State Park  

The rugged granite outcroppings of Laramie Mountains' foothills provide an exciting venue for exploration at Curt Gowdy State Park. More than 35 miles of trails open up this fascinating park to hikers, bikers, and riders. If you want to get out on the water, then the park's three separate reservoirs provide you with great options for fishing, boating, and watersports. If you have the proper permit, you can even go bow hunting at this park 15 minutes from Buford, Wyoming. 

Illini State Park  

Illini State Park is built on the remnants of a championship-caliber golf course, so it's an interesting destination on your road trip from Portland to Ocean City. The course may no longer be used for its original purpose, but it still delights those who come here to explore this park that's 10 minutes south of Rutland Township, Illinois. You can walk along multiple trails that take you through this once-great golf course; you can also take advantage of the Illinois River for high-quality fishing, boating, and swimming. 

East Harbor State Park  

If you desire to add another Great Lake besides Lake Michigan to your road trip itinerary from Portland to Ocean City, then East Harbor State Park, which is 25 minutes from Sandusky Township, Ohio, belongs on your list. This fantastic state park on the shores of Lake Erie is, of course, an outstanding place to get out and in the water. On dry land, you can play a round of disc golf, hike on 10 miles of trails, and hunt for waterfowl. This park is also home to nearly 350 campsites with electric hookups, so it's an awesome place to stay if you want to visit other area attractions.

Patapsco Valley State Park  

Another beautiful state park to use as a base while exploring an interesting area is Patapsco Valley State Park, which is a mere five minutes off of your route in Ellicott City, Maryland. This lovely state park that contains 32 miles of the Patapsco River is fairly close to both Baltimore and Washington, D.C., so you'll never lack for fun attractions to visit in the general area. Once you get inside the park, however, you might decide you don't want to leave. There are historic buildings, more than 200 miles of trails, and a disc golf course contained in the park.

Roaring Springs Waterpark  

Roaring Springs Waterpark is just two minutes off of Interstate 84 as it passes through Meridian, Idaho. This exciting waterpark is home to exhilarating rides like Snake River Run, Thunder Falls, and Cliffhanger. If you get hungry, you can eat at great places like Fiesta Springs, Surfside Grill, and Paradise Pizza. 

Snowbasin Resort  

Whether you're visiting Snowbasin Resort in warm or cold weather, you'll have plenty of fun activities from which to choose at this resort that's a dozen minutes from Morgan, Utah. In the summer, there are excellent places to go shopping, biking, and hiking; you can even play an 18-hole round of mini-golf. In the winter, you can hit the slopes for some epic skiing and snowboarding. 

McConaughy Lake  

McConaughy Lake is 30,000 acres large, so this gorgeous lake, 12 miles from Ogallala, Nebraska, provides plenty of room for boating, swimming, and fishing. Both McConaughy Lake and nearby Ogallala Lake have state recreation areas around them, so there are multiple parks to explore here at Nebraska's largest reservoir. 

Navy Pier  

Your route takes you so close to Chicago that you should take the opportunity to visit Navy Pier, which is just 25 minutes from Thornton Township, Illinois. Rides like the Centennial Wheel and the Pepsi Wave Swinger await, as do great places to eat like Giordano's and Harry Caray's Tavern.

Kennywood  

Kennywood is 20 minutes from Monroeville, Pennsylvania, so you should drop by this popular theme park on your road trip from Portland to Ocean City. Be sure to hop aboard thrilling rides like Steel Curtain, Phantom's Revenge, and Thunderbolt.
