Shenandoah National Park  

Covering more than 200,000 square miles, Shenandoah National Park offers numerous attractions and activities. Skyline Drive runs through the middle of the park, making it easy to move between sites. The view from the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains as you drive along Skyline Drive is stunning. Go for a rock scramble at Bearfence Rock Scramble and take a hike to see the waterfalls by following the Little Devil Stairs Trail. Plan on spending a day doing the 8.8-mile rock scramble and hike to the top of Old Rag. Meet raptors at the raptors program and take a horseback ride. Position yourself so that you can watch the fog roll into the valley at sunrise. This is also a great place to go stargazing at night.

There are two fun playgrounds where kids can work off their energy. Then, follow the two-mile Liberty Walk to the park's south end, where everyone will enjoy visiting the Liberty Science Center. This center has the largest and most technologically advanced planetarium in the Western Hemisphere. Hickory Run State Park  

Hickory Run State Park near Hazelton, Pennsylvania, offers over 40 miles of hiking trails. The Boulder Field at this state park is a National Natural Landmark, and it contains rocks that are over 26 feet long. Take time to explore the mud swamp. There are two lakes, including Sand Spring Lake, which is a great place to swim. Nockamixon State Park  

Nockamixon State Park near Quakertown, Pennsylvania, is home to the 1,450-acre Lake Nockamixon. Take a pontoon boat tour of the lake and learn why it is a favorite stop for migratory birds. Pine Grove Furnace State Park  

Pine Grove Furnace State Park is located near Gardners, Pennsylvania. The beaches at Laurel and Fuller Lake are almost always nearly perfect for building sandcastles. Laurel Lake is a fantastic place to go trout fishing. This park is the halfway point for the Appalachian Trail, and you can hike along the trail when you put this stop on your road trip itinerary from NYC to Davis. Sesame Place  

Bring your children to the place where Big Bird and his friends live by stopping at Sesame Place in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. This theme park is the first in the world to be a certified autism center. The park is divided into two large areas, with the water park only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Watch the Neighborhood Street Party Parade, and there are numerous shows to attend. Foothill Castle and Mercer Museum  

The Foothill Castle was home to Henry Chapman Mercer. The home in Doylestown is one of the finest examples of poured-in-place construction. It contains 44 rooms, over 200 windows, 18 fireplaces, 10 bathrooms, and one powder room. See a vast collection of pre-industrial hand tools at the Mercer Museum. 

James A. Michener Art Museum  

Initially founded by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer James A. Michener, the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown is in a 19th Century prison. It contains art created by Bucks County, Pennsylvania, residents. The museum's Pennsylvania Impressionism is especially impressive. Special events often occur in the former prison's courtyard, which is surrounded by a sculpture garden. 

Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve  

View over 700 native plant species at Bowman's Hill Wildlife Preserve in New Hope, Pennsylvania. There are over 4.5 miles of hiking trails allowing you to explore this natural setting. This is a great place to capture wildflower photos. There are also a variety of educational events held at the preserve throughout the year.

You will want to spend time exploring Thomas Edison National Historical Park when you stop in Newark.
