The earthworks at this site were constructed around 1000 C.E. Many short hiking trails allow you to see the mounds, including the Great Temple, up close. Learn more about the South Appalachian Mississippian culture by stopping at the museum containing over 1,200 artifacts. Enjoy beautiful scenery by biking on the trail running beside the Ocmulgee River. The museum is set up so that you chronologically follow the development of cultures in this area. Several streams flowing into the lake at this park are excellent places to go fishing. You'll also want to tour the Earth Lodge, where important ceremonies were held. See the 47 molded seats near the fireplace, where the high priests would sit during ceremonies.

Congaree National Park  

Congaree National Park near Hopkins, South Carolina, contains an extensive tract of bottomland hardwood forest. This park is home to America's largest concentration of big trees, in which 15 different species of the largest known trees are found here; among them is a loblolly pine that's over 167 feet tall and a bald cypress that has a circumference that is over 27 feet. A great way to explore this park is on its two waterway trails, however, there are also numerous hiking trails in this park, including the elevated Boardwalk Loop Trail. Grab a brochure in the park office as this trail has numbered sites to tell you about what you're seeing. Often, you can find park rangers and volunteers along this path who are eager to share their knowledge with you and answer your questions. Over 170 bird species have been documented in this location, and large grassy areas give you the chance to sight one of these species. It also makes it the perfect place to catch fireflies at night.

Fontainebleau State Park  

Visit Fontainebleau State Park on your Houston to Myrtle Beach road trip. The site of this Mandeville, Louisiana, park was originally a sugar plantation. The old train tracks that used to pick up the sugar and transport it to New Orleans have since been converted to a wonderful hiking and biking trail. You are able to head to the white sand beach for some sunning and swimming, or you can enjoy watching the sailboats on Lake Pontchartrain. Over 400 species of birds have been spotted at this park, which should motivate you to hike along the short nature trail that has interpretive signage. The fishing pier just outside the visitor center makes an excellent spot to watch the sunset. 

Blue Springs State Park  

The octagonal sandy-bottomed pools at Blue Springs State Park near Clio, Alabama, make an ideal spot to go swimming and is popular with the locals. The water in these pools are fed by an underground spring, which remains a constant 69 degrees. Head to the pond for some fishing fun or rent a pedal boat there. The Choctawhatchee River runs through this park, and the 2.1-mile loop hiking trail is a favorite of hikers in the spring when the magnolia trees are in bloom. 

Indian Springs State Park  

One of the nation’s oldest state parks is Indian Springs State Park near Floville, Georgia. The lake expands over 105-acres and is an excellent place to go kayaking or relax on its sandy beach. Take time to soak in the mineral-rich waters that have brought tourists to this location since the mid-1800s. If you look closely, you may find traces of when it was a luxurious resort. Take off your shoes and feel the mud squish between your toes as you go wading in Sandy Creek. If you visit this park in the summer, stop at the museum to learn more about the Creek Indians. 

Wind Creek State Park  

Be sure to include Wind Creek State Park near Alexander City, Alabama, on your road trip itinerary from Houston to Myrtle Beach. This park is a fantastic place to play on Lake Marten. Bass fishing tournaments often bring large crowds to this park. The lake is also a terrific place to go swimming. Get a bird’s eye view of this park by riding the ziplines and completing the treetop obstacle course that is available. This location is a fantastic place to play miniature golf. Bowmen will love the well-maintained archery range. 

High Falls State Park  

The tallest waterfall south of Atlanta is in High Falls State Park near Macon, Georgia. You can easily explore it from several different angles by following this park’s paths. Head toward the foundation of the old powerhouse to fish for bass in the river. The 650-acre lake at this park is a terrific place to catch catfish, and boat rentals are available. If you're making your trip in the summertime, then check out the swimming pool. This park also features a challenging miniature golf course.

New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum  

Head to New Orleans’ French Quarter to visit the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum. This two-room museum is packed with information to help you learn about the history and legends of voodoo. Make sure to plan time for a tour of the St. Louis Cemetery. Founded in 1789, this cemetery is a great place to see the elaborate crypts where residents are buried above ground because of the water level being so close to the earth’s surface. One of the most interesting things to notice here is how some gravesites are partially in the ground due to the fact that New Orleans is gradually sinking. 

Vincent-Doan House  

The Vincent-Doan house is the oldest house in Mobile, Alabama, still standing in its original location. This French-Creole house was constructed in 1827 and is the current home of the Mobile Medical Museum. View over 300 years of medical equipment collected locally and internationally, or stroll through the garden to see plants used in herbal medicine around the world.
