Yellowstone National Park  

Yellowstone National Park is the oldest national park in the U.S. The park contains over 10,000 hydrothermal features, like hot springs, mud pots, fumaroles, travertine terraces, and geysers. Approximately 3,900 bison live at this park, and you can often see them when hiking or while going on a scenic drive. This park covering more than 2 million acres is on top of an active super-volcano, but it has been about 70,000 years since it erupted. While many head to this park to watch Old Faithful erupt, Yellowstone is also home to a large canyon which is a great place to go hiking. While you will need a permit, you can go rafting on the Yellowstone River running through the canyon. 

Grand Teton National Park  

Grand Teton National Park near Moose, Wyoming, is located just a short distance from Yellowstone National Park. Therefore, it is easy to include both on your Fargo to Billings RV road trip. The 40-mile-long Teton Mountain range is the youngest in the Rocky Mountains. This park is home to more than 11 glaciers, which you can see on hikes. The largest is the Teton Glacier, which you can also see when driving through the park. Take in this park’s beauty by driving the 42-mile scenic loop road. The wide roads through Grand Teton are also a great place to go on a bike ride. Climbers often head to this park, and a favorite climbing location is Irene’s Arete, which is near the Meadows Campground. The portion of the Snake River running through the park is a fantastic place for a rafting trip. This state park, open from May to October, is a dramatic place for a picnic on your Fargo to Billings road trip. 

Pirogue Island State Park  

Stop in Glendive, Montana, to visit Pirogue Island State Park. This park on the Yellowstone River is a fantastic place to go fishing. In the summer, hike down the side channels if they are not flowing for some fascinating hiking, and let your inner child come out with some wading fun. Watch for bald eagles flying overhead and various mammals, including mule deer, near the trails. When the water level is higher, you will want to go kayaking and canoeing on the Yellowstone River. 

Pictograph Cave State Park  

See rock art up to 2,000 years old and try to decipher its meaning at Pictograph Cave State Park near Billings, Montana. Stop at the visitor center to see over 30,000 objects found from the prehistoric hunters who visited this location. Learn how researchers use scientific techniques to determine the ingredients used to create the art, which allows them to determine when the prehistoric people made them more accurately. Follow the short interpretive trail to see the three caves containing the rock art at this park.

Frontier Village  

Stop at Frontier Village in Jamestown, North Dakota, on your road trip from Fargo to Billings. See historic buildings filled with antiques moved to this site from many different locations across the state. Visit the Writer’s Shack to learn more about the life of Louis L’Amour. This location, open from Memorial Day through the end of September, is next to the National Buffalo Museum and the World’s Largest Buffalo. 

Scandanavian Heritage Park  

Head north about two hours from Bismarck, North Dakota, to reach Minot, North Dakota, to visit the Scandinavian Heritage Park. See the stabbur originally constructed in Norway. This replica storehouse based on an original built in 1770 was then disassembled and shipped to Minot, where workers reassembled it. See the replica Gol Stave Church based on the one in Bygdoy Park in Oslo, Norway. The woodworking and wood-carving skills used to construct this building are amazing. Do not leave without seeing the 30-foot-tall Dala House. 

Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center  

Consider extending your Fargo to Billings road trip to visit the Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center near Lovell, Montana. While this will add almost two hours to your road trip, you will want to learn about the herd of Colonial Spanish horses that have lived in these mountains for over 200 years.
