Indiana Dunes National Park

Start your Detroit to Tampa RV road trip by heading west to explore Indiana Dunes National Park near Chesterton, Indiana. There is plenty of fun to be had at this park along Lake Michigan's southern shore. You will want to take the Diana Dunes Dare while visiting this park. The dare starts at the West Beach Parking Lot and heads across the dunes. See Chicago's skyline from this path. Then, listen to the distant water pounding against the shore as you watch for birds in the jack pine trees. Finish by walking across the beach to the bathhouse, where you are encouraged to post a selfie that you took somewhere along the path. You will also want to explore the Dune Succession Story hike to learn how the dunes have changed over time.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Next, head east on your road trip from Detroit to Tampa to visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park near Brecksville, Ohio. Put on your hiking boots to follow the Towpath Trail along the historic Ohio & Erie Canal's path. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The first entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on your road trip from Detroit to Tampa from the north is the Sugarlands entrance. This entrance is the most touristy and busiest. Consider skipping the crowds hustling their way into the park and use the Wears Valley entrance near Pigeon Forge. This beautiful entrance takes you across an old-stone bridge before you arrive at Mudflats Bottom Picnic Area. This entrance road connects with Little River Gorge Road, so you can easily reach other areas of the park, including the Cades Cove area, which contains the most historic buildings in the park. Clingmans Dome, which is the highest point in the park, and Newfound Gap, which is the lowest drivable pass in the mountains, are also easy to reach from this entrance. By using this entrance and getting an early start, you can easily beat the crowds to your favorite destinations.

Everglades National Park

There is no need to go clear south to the main entrance to Everglades National Park if you want to extend your road trip itinerary from Detroit to Tampa. Instead, head south about three hours and enter the park at the Everglade City entrance. Take the Ten Thousand Islands boat tour to see the mangrove islands or rent a kayak and explore them independently. If time is pushing you, then consider visiting the park's towers so that you can see as much of the park as possible. The 65-foot-tall Shark Valley Observatory Tower is a great place to see this area of the park. Underneath, stroll along the path to see large alligators that often congregate there. Then, head farther south to the Pahayokee Overlook to walk along the raised boardwalk to the observation platform to see the river of grass. End your visit at the Shark Valley Visitors Center by taking the tram to see even more of this park.
