Yorktown Battlefield was the site of one of the most important battles in the Revolutionary War. In 1781, the British army surrendered to the American army and its allies on this legendary field, marking the last key fight of the war and the beginning of independence. Today, the area is peaceful and beautiful, creating plenty of opportunities to learn about history and put yourself in the shoes of the colonists and soldiers. Plan a full day to explore the site; you'll need it to fully take in the allied siege lines, British defenses, and the reality of war in the infancy of the United States. Yorktown Battlefield is part of the larger Colonial National Historical Park.

Moore House
After American and allied armies laid siege on the British troops in Yorktown, the latter surrendered. The generals of the two forces eventually met at Moore House to work out the details of the British surrender. Working together, the generals wrote the Articles of Capitulation, which were then approved by General George Washington and General Lord Cornwallis, the leader of the British forces. The original Moore House was damaged significantly during the Civil War many years later; it was refurbished in 1881 and restored to its original form by the National Park Service in the early 1930s. Today, you can tour the house and see the room where the historic surrender happened.
