The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in Buffalo, New York, stands on the site of President Roosevelt’s sudden inauguration. President Roosevelt’s inauguration occurred after the 1901 assassination of President William McKinley. During a period of national uncertainty and bereavement, the then-Vice President Roosevelt and the deceased President McKinley’s cabinet gathered in Buffalo to administer the oath of office to Roosevelt and to inaugurate him as the 26th president of the United States. The building where President Roosevelt’s inauguration took place still stands today and serves as a museum of Roosevelt, Buffalo, and the tumultuous period following McKinley’s assassination.

How To Get To Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site

From Syracuse, take Interstate 81 Northbound to Exit 25A, and merge onto Interstate 90 West toward Buffalo. Travel on Interstate 90 West until reaching Exit 51W for New York Route 33. Take Route 33 to Edward Street, and turn right. After 0.5 miles, make another right turn onto Franklin Street. Take this road for another 0.5 miles, and the historic site will be on the left. 

From Pittsburgh, take Interstate 79 northbound to Exit 178A for Interstate 90 East toward Buffalo. Take Interstate 90 to Exit 53 for Interstate 190 northbound toward Downtown Buffalo. Take Exit 6 off Interstate 190 for Elm Street. Follow Elm Street for approximately one mile before making a left turn onto Goodell Street. After 0.5 miles, take a right turn onto Franklin Street. After another 0.5 miles, the site will be on the left. 

The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site is open from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on weekends. The site is closed Mondays and Tuesdays as well as on most major holidays. This site can become crowded, and parking can be limited. It is recommended that tickets be purchased in advance. This site is mostly indoors and can be enjoyed in any weather.
