Stonewall National Monument

Learn about the long, hard fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the United States at the Stonewall National Monument, a park that encompasses more than 7 acres in Manhattan, including Christopher Park and the legendary Stonewall Inn. On June 28, 1969, the police raided the inn, which was operating as a gay bar. Instead of instilling fear in the community, the raid prompted days of demonstrations against unfair police treatment. This unprecedented uprising was a turning point in the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement. Today, you can walk the same streets, visit the Stonewall Inn, and learn about the rocky road to equality. Barack Obama designated the area as a national monument in 2016, so many of the associated sites are still in development.
