Governors Island National Monument

Lower Manhattan’s Governors Island became a colonial militia base in 1755. At least four different nations saw value in controlling this New York harbor island. The Lenape and Dutch saw it as a valuable trading base while the British valued its strategic position. George Washington and his troops tried to wrestle it away from the British in 1776, but they failed. America finally got control of the island following the American Revolution and used it as a military base until 1996.
