Things To Do Near Fort Frederica National Monument
After taking the Golden Isle Parkway to Fort Frederica, you can find lots to do at this fort that is surrounded by a maritime forest. Start your trip at the visitor center and tour the museum to see the archeological finds dug up at this location that was originally constructed in the 1740s. This place is a fantastic spot for a bike ride, and a bike rack and bike repair station are available near the park’s entrance. This spot is also a great place to go bird-watching or to sit on one of the benches and watch the water.

Follow boardwalks and cross bridges on this trail at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Headquarters. This trail runs through several ecosystems, including marshes and maritime forests, as it passes along the shoreline. This location is a great place to go bird-watching.

Wanderer Memory Trial
The Wanderer Memory Trial runs alongside the Jekyll River on Jekyll Island. Interpretative signage along the way tells the story of Umawalla, who was brought to America from Africa on the last known slave ship to land in Georgia.

St. Simons Lighthouse Museum
Climb the 129 steps to the top of the St. Simons Lighthouse for panoramic views of the entire area. Then, head next door to the lightkeeper’s house. It is filled with artifacts related to the lighthouse. Some artifacts also relate to the people who lived in this home and who kept light burning from 1872 to 1950. The lighthouse still sends beams out 23 nautical miles to warn ships of the island’s danger.
