Fort Frederica National Monument

British soldier James Oglethorpe had Fort Frederica constructed to protect the town's citizens from attack by Spanish soldiers. You can visit the remains of the fort, which is mostly underground, on a trip to St. Simons Island, Georgia. The fort, which you can tour with a park ranger, is surrounded by several hiking trails. You will love the beautiful scenery of this area.

After taking the Golden Isle Parkway to Fort Frederica, you can find lots to do at this fort that is surrounded by a maritime forest. Start your trip at the visitor center and tour the museum to see the archeological finds dug up at this location that was originally constructed in the 1740s. This place is a fantastic spot for a bike ride, and a bike rack and bike repair station are available near the park’s entrance. This spot is also a great place to go bird-watching or to sit on one of the benches and watch the water.

How To Get To Fort Frederica National Monument

It is easy to get from Brunswick to Fort Frederica National Monument. Take Gloucester St/State Route 25 Connector north, and turn left on Glynn Avenue. Then, turn right to get on the F J Torras Causeway. Stay straight to continue onto Kings Way, and veer left to get on Sea Island Road. Turn left on Frederica Road. You will need to take the second exit at the traffic circle to remain on Frederica Road. After the circle, you will arrive at Fort Frederica National Monument in 0.9 miles. This destination is open all year long, except for a few winter holidays. It can be bustling in April and May because it is a popular place for school field trips.
