Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The best hiking trails are in the North and South units. If you're looking for a short hike in the North Unit, consider the Little Mo Trail, which runs through river bottomland. Another terrific option is the Caprock-Coulee Nature Trail, which runs through badland terrain and dry washes. At the South Unit, consider the Painted Canyon Nature Trail, which runs down into the canyon and gives hikers an up-close view of the area's geology. Another favorite is the hike to the Boicourt Overlook, which is especially great when the sun is setting.

There are two campgrounds at Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Juniper Campground is in the North Unit, while Cottonwood Campground is in the South Unit. Juniper Campground usually fills to capacity every afternoon from mid-May to mid-September. Therefore, consider making reservations for Cottonwood Campground in advance, although half of the sites are reserved for first-come, first-served guests. Neither campground has hookups. Expect to pay $7 in the winter and $14 in the summer. Sully Creek State Park has 17 campsites with water and electricity. Six of them have horse corrals, and there are also 12 primitive sites. The CCC Campground at the Dakota Prairie National Grassland has 32 sites, five of which are reservable. This campground is about 15 miles south of Watford City. There are eight campgrounds in the Little Missouri National Grassland, which has diverse locations in Western North Dakota. There are also private campgrounds nearby. Expect to pay about $60 per night for full hookups.
