- Petrified Forest National Park
A highlight of RVing to Petrified Forest National Park is seeing the Agate House, a 1,000-year old pueblo made of petrified wood. One of the most popular points of interest in the park is Newspaper Rock, a collection of rocks upon which people have inscribed messages, drawings, and other carvings for more than 2,000 years. The Painted Desert's swaths of red, orange, and pink soil at the northern edge of the park are particularly vibrant in the light of a sunset, and the 225-million year old petrified wood itself is an interesting part of one of the park's guided tours. The park's two visitor centers are open daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. You can find RV rentals near Petrified Forest National Park in Eagar and Show Low.
Petrified Forest's roads easily accommodate larger RVs, including those with towed vehicles. However, it's best for large RVs to steer clear of Pintado Point and Agate Bridge — these spots have tight turnarounds that can pose a challenge if other vehicles are present. RV parking in Petrified Forest National Park is also readily available in large lots. While RV camping isn't available within Petrified Forest National Park, adventurers can enjoy a unique experience by hiking into the backcountry for an overnight stay with a free permit. This offers a special opportunity to immerse yourself in the park's natural beauty, setting up camp at least half a mile from your vehicle. For the latest updates on park conditions, closures, or warnings, check out the park webpage. Note that the park is accessible through two entrances: the north entrance off Route 40 and the south entrance off Route 180.
