Trails in the Morehead Canyon area allow guests to climb Point Outlook or follow a park road laid out in 1914 to see Mesa Verde's North Escarpment. Many of the trails in the Chapin Mesa area run through diverse ecosystems, including a pinyon-juniper forest. The trails headed through Spruce and Soda Canyons are extremely steep. Some of the most strenuous trails in the park are in the Wetherill Mesa area. These trails often lead past cliff dwellings and long houses.

RVing to Mesa Verde National Park also gives you the chance to explore the surrounding area. This park is about 35 miles west of Durango, Colorado. Historic buildings containing restaurants, galleries, and boutiques fill this community's downtown area. A True Western Roundup showcasing Western heritage events occurs on Wednesdays at the La Plata County Fairgrounds & Event Center from late May to early August. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad offers train rides through the mountains. Chimney Rock National Monument is about 50 miles east of Durango. About 50 miles southwest of the city is Navajo State Park. The large reservoir there extends for over 20 miles, and there are a variety of hiking trails. The Durango Special Recreation Management Area consists of five properties. Their Grandview Ridge, Animas City Mountain, and Skyline areas have hiking trails while their Turtle Lake and East Animas Climbing Area offer technical climbing and bouldering. Dave Sipe's Folk Art Museum in Mancos, Colorado, contains wood artwork created by this artist. In Cortez, Colorado, the Cortez Cultural Center often allows visitors to watch Native American dancers. They operate the Hawkins Preserve, which offers hiking and climbing opportunities. Hovenweep National Monument is about 12 miles outside of town. Visitors can see Ancestral Pueblo structures while hiking.

Located about 4 miles from the park's entrance, the Morefield Campground is open year-round. This campground has 267 campsites, but most are for tent campers. Gasoline and showers are available. In the summer, a pet kennel is available. Nightly prices start at $38 per night. There are also private campgrounds in this area. Consider options in Cortez, Colorado; Dolores, Colorado; Durango, Colorado; or Townsend, Colorado. Nightly prices range from $50 to $75, depending on amenities. There are also many nearby public areas. Mancos State Park is home to Jackson Gulch Reservoir, and they have a campground. Much of this area is covered by the San Juan National Forest, where visitors can fish, hike, and stargaze.

How to get to Mesa Verde National Park
Cortez Municipal Airport is the closest airport to Mesa Verde National Park, and driving to Mesa Verde National Park from there is easy. From the airport, head north on Road F and turn right on Road G. Turn left to get on US 160 East. In about 10.6 miles, take the ramp to get on Ruins Road. At the roundabout, take the second exit and turn left. Once you arrive at the park, you will be near the Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center.
