A comprehensive initiative is underway to revitalize the Tuolumne Meadows Campground, a pivotal project aligned with the objectives outlined in the 2014 Tuolumne River Plan. The significance of this undertaking necessitates the temporary closure of the campground until 2025, during which period all forms of camping at Tuolumne Meadows will be unavailable. Positioned along the Tioga Road, this expansive campground stands as Yosemite's largest, nestled at an elevation of 8,000 feet (2,600 m), offering seasonal access to a plethora of hikes, picturesque lakes, and prominent viewpoints that characterize the awe-inspiring Yosemite landscape. Although the campground is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes away from Yosemite Valley, the proximity of essential amenities, including a small store, grill, and post office in Tuolumne Meadows, enhances the overall visitor experience.
With roots dating back to its construction in 1931–1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Tuolumne Meadows Campground has been a testament to enduring craftsmanship. Expanded in the 1960s and currently sprawling across 140 acres, the campground boasts a total of 304 drive-in campsites, seven group sites, four horse sites, and 21 backpacker sites. Beyond providing a space for outdoor enthusiasts to connect with nature, the campground stands as a living legacy, encapsulating the rich history and conservation ethos that defines Yosemite National Park.
