Assateague Island National Seashore Campground is operated by the National Park Service. Assateague is a barrier island in the Atlantic Ocean shared by Maryland and Virginia, but camping is only allowed in the Maryland section. Assateague Island is most famous for its wild horses that are believed to have lived there since the 17th century.
Assateague Island National Seashore Campground has notably fewer amenities than many campgrounds, but there are lots of things to do, including taking pictures of the horses and other local wildlife. You can also go swimming, fishing, kayaking, or canoeing. Assateague even has horse camps for people who bring their equine friends along, and the Visitor Center boasts various exhibits, including a film about the horses, touch tanks, and aquaria.
“Be sure to stop at the Visitor Center before you cross the bridge. The people who work there are very kind and knowledgeable. The displays and information we very interesting. We saw ponies near the marsh and ponies visited the beach around 3:30pm. It was an amazing day!” – Karen, Google Review
